Melissa,
I have
been researching Gardeniers in Columbia Co., hoping to find some that are related to my
great great grandmother. Somehow, over a
month ago, I got linked to a site and ended up at:
http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/ward/15787 .(Not the same page after
update)
I
went there again tonight (this morning). Jochem Gardenier was baptized on 24 Feb 1783 at
Kinderhook RDC rather than the 24 Feb 1783 that you have posted. The approximate text (in case you don't own the
book) is:
"Baptized
24 Feb 1783. Jochem, of Cornelis Gardenier
and Antje Van Sleyk. Wit.: Jochem Van Sleik and wife Cornelia Van
Valkenburg".
Now
you know the names of Jochem's parents if you
didn't already have them (they weren't on the website).
I
have a question. What is the source for his
marriage to Eunice Hoes/Goes? You have a
marriage date, but no location. It was not at
Kinderhook or Albany or Greenbush in a Reformed Church.
I
almost certainly have the same marriage under different spellings.
Here
is what I have:
JEHOIAKIM
GARDENIER (Jehoicum, Jahoiachim, Johaiakim, Johoiacem, Johircher, Jehirakim). Some of these would almost sound like Jochem when
pronounced. These were all spellings at his
children's baptisms.
He
married:
TEUNCHE
HOES (Teunchy, Taunche, Tuneche, Tunche,
Teuntie) (also Goes, Huss). Her nickname might have been Eunice. If you left out two letters from Teunche, you
would have '_eun c_e'. That is awfully close
to Eunice. Also, the maternal great
grandmother of Eunice was named Theuntje Vandenburg according to your records.
They
had their first child Anche bp. 22 Jan 1804 at the Greenbush Reformed Church, just 9½
months after your wedding date of 10 Apr 1803.
In
those days, children were usually born within a year of the marriage. Their second child is probably the one that you
had:
Ann,
born 24 Mar 1806, bp. at the Greenbush Reformed Church.
There
is a good possibility that Anche was also called Ann, and may have died in infancy, so
they named the second child Ann also. Or,
the parents just named the two children after their own mothers who were
Antje
"Anna" Van Slyck (paternal) and Annatje Van Buren (maternal). In good Dutch naming practices, they named the
first four children after the mothers and fathers of the married couple. Guess what? The
next two children were named Cornelius and Peter!! after their fathers Cornelis Gardenier
and Peter J. Goes. Are you convinced yet? If not, there was a child Barent named after
Barent C. Van Buren, the grandfather of Eunice. There
were also children Abraham and Cornelia, probably named after Jochem's brother and sister
of the same names.
The
only child that I haven't connected with certainty is Gitty Maria, but I think she was
named after Geetruy Van Buren, grandmother of Eunice.
I
have spent about three hours sorting this out, so I don't have time to compare other
Gardeniers that you have. The one that I am
writing about is pretty interesting for me. It
is the first time that I have successfully related the children of a marriage to the
ancestor's names. It was only possible
because I have the Gardenier ancestors and you have the Hoes ancestors. Usually, I don't have the ancestors of the
spouses.
So
once again, what information do you have that Eunice Hoes married Jochem Gardenier, and
where did they marry?
