Hi!

According to the 20 July 1866 issue of the Vineyard Gazette, Sophronia (Chase) Ingerson died in Woburn, MA on 10 July 1866, aged 45. She was the wife of George L. Ingerson, and was previously a resident of Tisbury.

Her gravestone, (viewable online at www.vineyard.net/vineyard/history/cemetery/cp0202.htm) also states that she was aged 45y 3m.

She appears in the 1860 Tisbury, MA census, aged 39, with her husband (a. 43, born in VT) and children (George L., 12; Ira W., 4), and also with Sarah Chase, aged 66.

They do not appear in the 1850 Tisbury census, but Sally Chase, aged 56,
does:
        Timothy Chase, a. 69, farmer -- born 28 Nov 1780 in Tisbury
        Sally Chase, a. 56 ------------ born 4 July 1793 in Tisbury
        Abigail Chase, a. 21
        Betsey A. Chase, a. 15
        Benjamin Chase, a. 16, farmer

Their marriage appears in the Tisbury Vital Records: Sophronia Chase, 24, seamstress, d. Timothy and Sally, and George L. Ingerson, 29, tanner, s. _____ dec'd, Aug. 5, 1845.

Checking Charles Banks' "History of Martha's Vineyard", Vol. III, p. 79, shows me that Timothy Chase (b. 28 Nov 1781) was the son of Timothy Chase and Rebecca Bassett, and that his second wife was named Sarah Luce, whom he married on 7 June 1818.

Timothy Chase's grave is next to Sophronia's, at
www.vineyard.net/vineyard/history/cemetery/cp0510.htm

and so is Sally's, at www.vineyard.net/vineyard/history/cemetery/cp0509.htm

Sarah (Sally) Chase's death record states that she died 11 Apr 1870 in Tisbury of "Inflammation of Lung" (the mort. sched. says "bronchitas"), and gives her parents' names as Benjamin and Sarah Luce, and her birthplace as Tisbury.

I'm not sure who Benjamin and Sarah Luce are -- there are a zillion Luce families here.

Are you related to George Ingerson? What can you tell me about George and Sophronia? Do they have gravestones in Woburn too? I'd like to add information to my site, and then make a link to yours.

Chris
