Subject: Re: BaysingerBaysinger
Dear Ms Ward,
I have quite a lot of information on Peter Baysinger's family that was
provided to me by a Bernice Stephens, a descendant of Peter's, several
years ago. We used to correspond regularly, but I have lost touch
with her. I have not done any research on the Rice family, but I
know that
Elizabeth's father was named Elias. My records are not set up to transmit
by computer, but if you wish I can send additional information by surface
mail provided I have your address.
Peter's father was Casper Baysinger, born in Lancaster County, Pa on
28 June, 1775, married Eve Snider on 26 Dec 1796 in Rockingham, Co., Va.,
and died in Edgar Co., Ill. in 1841. Their children were :
1) John, born 15 Feb,
1799 in Rockingham Co., Va., died 15 Oct 1839 in Edgar Co., Ill.
2) Jacob, born 20
Nov 1800 in Rockingham Co., Va., died 1844/45 Breckinridge Co., Ky.
3) Henry, born 180?
in Greenbrier Co., West Va., died 1836/38 Edgar Co., Ill.
4) Abraham, born 25
May 1803 in Greenbrier Co., West Va., died 21 Mar 1890 in Breckinridge
Co., Ky.
5) Peter (you have
the information)
Casper's parents were Johan Peter Besinger, born in Alsace or Switzerland
(came to America on the Minerva arriving 1 Oct 1770) and Barbara Schneider,
married 10 Oct 1711 in the Trinity Reformed church of Lancaster, Pa.
She was the daughter of Abraham Schneider. Johan Peter died in some
kind of accident on his tobacco farm in Virginia in 1801. The children
of Johan
Peter and Barbara were:
1) Johan Michael (my ancestor),
born 24 Dec 1772 in Lancaster Co., Pa., Married Barbara Plecher in Rockingham
Co., Va. on 23 Oct 1793
2) Casper (mentioned above)
3) Juliana Elizabeth born 20 Sep
1777 in Lancaster Co., Pa.,married her cousin George.
4) Maria Margaret, born 28 Jun
1785 in Lancaster Co., Pa., marr.Joseph Huff.
5) Johannes, born 6 Dec 1787 in
Lancaster Co., Pa. (died young)
6) Valentine, born 1 Mar 1795
in Rockingham Co., Va., married Serena Jane Ruby, died in Kansas 21 Aug
1889.
7) Susanna who married a Ruby
(You have this).
Since there are date gaps in the above there may well have been other
children. Johan Peter had been previously married in Alsace and had at
least two children by his first marriage
1) Peter, whose second wife
was Hannah Snider, a sister of Casper's wife. They were married in
Rockingham Co., Va 27 May 1796.
2) Magdalena, marr. Andreas
Schaeffer in Lancaster Co., Pa. 1 Apr 1788.
Johan Peter's parents were Jacob Besinger and Margaret Laemmer.
He was a herdsman in Hermersweiler in Northern Alsace. The children
that I am aware of were:
1) Valentine, married Maria
Eva Haas - record in the Prueschdorf Church book in Alsace. Valentine
was a herdsman in Lampertsloch.
2) Susanna (1744-1829) married
Philip Heinrich Marzolf, Oberbetschdorf 1777.
3) Johan Peter (mentioned
above)
4) Philip Jacob, Marr. Dorothea
Dreher
5) Michael, Married Magdalena
??
The latter three came to America on the same ship.
The Baysinger family members were not all saints. Two of Casper's
grandsons were hanged - one of Jacob's sons for murder and your Peter's
son, Peter. The latter was accused of being a horse thief, but ther
is rather general belief that he was set up. This happened in Olathe, Kansas,
when the pro and anti slavery people were fighting over whether Kansas
should be a free or slave state. Peter was supposedly set up by the pro
slavery people and lynched before a trial could take place. His descendants
were told that he died in the Civil War. Abraham supposedly met his
demise by falling into the fireplace and incurring serious burns.
The Baysingers certainly moved a lot. Let us hope it was not
to keep ahead of the law.
I must end this now. I hope the info fills in a few blanks.
