
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is one of the four nationally recognized African American sororities that hold membership in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (the governing council for the nine predominatly African American fraternities and sororities).
Recognizing the need for promoting education, moral character, and finer womanhood, seven young school teachers organized the first chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho on November 12, 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sigma Gamma Rho is a non-profit, collegiate sorority dedicated to the encouragement and promotion of high scholastic attainment, community service and improvement of the quality of life, our lives and the society in which we live. The sorority's slogan "Greater Service, Greater Progress" serves as a foundation for our objectives and activities.
The Lambda Eta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho was charted on September 12, 1989, at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau Missouri. Some of our contributions to the community includes: St. Vincent's Vittles, After School Tutorial Program, Safe House for Women and the Southeast Missouri Humane Society.
