In my opinion Zone of the Enders is one of the coolest mech fighters out there, and easily one of the best games on the Playstation 2. But, as with all quality games on the PS2, it was terribly short. Produced by Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid), it's no surprise that this game is so sweet. You are Leo, a boy who accidentally stumbled into the cockpit of an Orbital Frame called Jehuty while running from enemy forces. I rented it around 9 PM and was so addicted to it I stayed up untill 3 to beat it. Even though it only took about 5 hours to beat the first time around, it was a very enjoyable 5 hours. There are a few things that give this game a decent replay value, like the versus mode you can unlock after beating the game. One thing that I don't understand about the VS though, is the horrible camera angles, even though the real game has wonderful camera angles. For some strange reason, during most of the fight the camera is behind the enemy. Try fighting a Mummyhead in the Hangar. You literally cannot see yourself because his fat ass is in the way. And unfortunately, you can only fight one enemy at a time. But otherwise it's not all that bad. Even though the versus mode isn't incredible, it is there. The in-game graphics are amazing, but sadly the FMV isn't very good at all. I could name many PSone games with better FMV. Some of the FMV at the end could actually be called ugly. The gameplay graphics make up for it highly though. There is a targeting system similar to the one in the N64 Zeldas, and it works magnificently with the game engine. The sound is good, and the game has nice voice acting. The music is pretty cool too, especially in City 1. Overall a very enjoyable experience, a really good idea, and a sequel waiting to happen. Rent it first though.
