They ponder what to do for a little while, before Rooks suggests going to visit Reinoll, a wise old hermit who lives in the Forest of Doubt. But before he can leave, Salah insists on coming along and Axs leaves her in Rooks' care.
Journeying through Draven Pass on their way to the forest, the duo spots an elfin warrior fighting off monsters all by himself. Though he leaves them at that time, he later returns after Rooks and Salah successfully slay a Cyclops in the forest. The elf, a man named Darwin, tells them that a powerful monster is up ahead in the Crimson Valley, and he would like help to deal with it. Rooks agrees, and the three begin their travels together.
The monster in question turns out to be Efrite, the Fire Spirit, who had gone mad. Defeating it caused the spirit to calm down and allowed Rooks to call him into battle. With the monster gone, Darwin leaves to return to his own adventures.
At Reinoll's, the elder is happy to see Rooks and surprised to see Salah in his company. He brings up her twin sister, but changes the subject after he sees it upset her. Reinoll bades the two to come into his home, and tells them about the Four Spirits and Three Treasures needed to contain Rimsala...one of which is the Crystal Sword captured by Ariel and Teefa.
Revealing herself to have hidden the Enchanted Jewel in the Ice Mine, Salah goes outside to check on the situation. Unfortunately, Ariel had been waiting in ambush and captured her, even threatening her life if Rooks tries to get close. He escapes, and Rooks gives chase.
Just outside Reinoll's cabin waits Zerel, Ariel's second apprentice. He challenges Rooks to a duel to buy time for Ariel's escape. Though Rooks wins, Ariel has already gotten far away with the princess...
