Intro to the Seacraft

--Dejah--

Dejah walks into the crew quarters, bright smile on her face. "Good day to you all. Ahh I see you're meeting the rest of the apprentices Auren, good to see that. If they give you any trouble let me know." She smiles and winks. She then looks to Faolain. "Well I won't bother with showing you around the hall as you've most likely already gotten to explore it. So we'll get you familiar with the Masters and Journeyman you should know about...as well as about the craft."

Faolain nods. "Oh-kay. Sounds great..." Swinging her legs over the edge of her cot, Faolain focuses her steely blue eyes on Dejah, becoming more alert as she does so.

Auren nods, "I am sure that none of the apprentices will give me any trouble Dejah. It's good to see you too." He goes back to looking over the inventory of the ship and marking off what he needs more of and what he has enough of.

Dejah smiles as she has her mentee's full attention and starts with the lesson. "Well first you need to be familiar with the important people in the craft. We'll start off with the masters first, the Craftmaster of our craft is Master Sanderson, he is up at the Master Sea Hall. You probably won't see him often as he keeps to himself a lot. Other masters you should be familiar with are Masters Gyrel, Novec and Chandra, Master Gyrel is a Master Captain, Master Novec is our Master Shipwright and our crafthead here at Ista Sea Hall is Master Chandra, also the Captain of the DragonWing." She smiles as she continues on. "We have several Journeymen Captains in the craft, they are Starr, Thalassina, Padraig, Brialana and Kerran, all of which have their own ships they captain. Due to changes in the craft and such, you can only become a Captain and have your own ship when you make Master, and the only other Journeyman you need to know to concern yourself at this point besides the Journeyman Captains is myself."

Dejah looks as she notices another apprentice listening in on the lesson. "Well can either of you apprentices tell me what the Seacraft Hall does for Pern?" She looks to the young man that has been just assigned to the DragonWing that she hasn't been able to formally introduce herself to.

Realizing he's been noticed, Delvan smiles warmly. "G'day...m'name's Delvan, recently assigned to the DragonWing here." Nodding his respects to the Journeyman, he looks thoughtful for a moment. "Aye, we help transport goods, and folks too."

Dejah nods with a smile. "Yes shipping goods and transporting people is part of what our craft is responsible for, can you think of anything more the seacraft might be useful for?"

Faolain grins. "Catching fish, mapping Pern's seas... can think of those..." Chuckle. She sidles a little closer to friend Delvan and gives him a smile.

Dejah nods as she looks over to her mentee. "You're correct on those as well Faolain. Navigation as well as exploration and fishing are big parts of the craft so much that our members can even specialize in navigation or fishing. The Seacraft also is involved in cargo and mail passage between holds and those weyrs near the sea, rescue and as well as sport. Yes we can race our ships too." She smiles. "Can you think of two other crafts that seacraft has close links to on Pern? And what is the connection between those crafts and the seacraft?"

Faolain hurms. "Dolphincraft and starcraft. Starcraft for navigation; dolphineers for underwater exploration?"

Delvan grins at Faolain, nudging her in the side before turning back to Dejah. "Aye, prolly the Dolphincraft, since their 'phin partners live /in/ the sea and can help guide us..." He pauses to allow Faolain to answer.

Dejah smiles to both apprentices. "Very good you two, you're very correct on both answers. Now as apprentices you all have duties to the Seacraft, can either of you tell me what sort of things you think apprentices are responsible for in the Seacraft?"

Delvan crosses his ankles. "Keeping the ships up to par, mendin' sails, and..of course...learnin'!"

Dejah laughs with a smile. "Yes repair of the ships and sail as well as scraping the hull are very important part of an apprentices duty as well as learning, can you name any others?"

Faolain thinks a moment. Her mind is getting blank... "Dunno."

Delvan blinks at Faolain, then thinks himself. Takes some effort on his part, but he manages. "How'bout creatin' charts and things, keepin' seafarin' records up to date?"

Dejah smiles as she looks to Delvan. "Well that's not so much of an apprentices job as it would be a journeyman or a master's job or that of a starcrafter on board that deals with navigation. It requires a set of skills that are very complicated and you will learn about those as you get further into your apprenticeship. As far as other duties apprentices are responsible for are: cleaning the sea hall and chores around the sea hall as those chores demanded of a crewmember on ship to keep the ship's appearance up. You are also responsible for hauling in fish, preparing fish and cleaning them as well as baiting lures and as a runner to journeyman and masters of the craft."

Delvan nods in agreement, then gets a questioning look on his face. "We don't have to cook them fish, do we? Cuz if Fao has to cook, we might be needin' the Healers help." Eyes widen in mock horror as he glances at Faolain. "I'm just kiddin' lass." Wink.

Faolain gives Delvan a look of mock indignation as she elbows him back gently. "Don' undermine my fishcooking skills, y'hear?"

Dejah laughs with a smile. "Well it's always a good thing to learn how to cook fish even though we do have a cook aboard the DragonWing. You never know when it'll be a good survival skill if there's a shipwreck and you happen to survive." She smiles over to Auren. "Agree with me on that 'eh?"

Auren hears cook and looks up, "What?"

Dejah laughs at Auren. "What I was saying is that cooking is an invaluable skill should one need it in a survival situation especially in case of a shipwreck and being stranded. Don't you agree?"

Auren hmms and nods, "Everyone should know how to cook, Dejah is right. You never know when it will come in handy or if you happen to get in trouble and get sent to me to work in the kitchens as a punishment."

Dejah smiles over to Auren, the ship's cook and smiles. "Well we'll discuss survival and such more into later lessons."
