His knights were world reknowned as the best melee soldiers of any army. Naturally, The Empire looked to this example of strong military presense as a worthy target for their first thrust into the northern continent. When siege was set upon the castle and it's survivors prepared for death, one simple man gave a final example of the true nature of a Doman elite.

With the defeat of the would-be god Kefka, the people who fought his reign had a moment to exhale a sigh of relief. However, the strength and twisted nature of evil didn't allow for his end, instead finding a last use for the winged angel of death. The resistance fighters had only a slight time to decide the fate of the world, and with conflicting desires and senseless rage, made the choice that allowed for only the Figaro Castle occupants to become the sole survivors of humanity. The future, what was left of it, became a struggle unique as it's leaders.

If it has proven anything, science has proven that pandora's box has many meanings other than the metaphorical. The development of a new life, completely birthed of science and technology, allowed for the manipulators of science to create their intrument of revenge against those that spited them. Shinra, ruined by AVALANCHE, disintegrated and fell to ruin save one group of scientists. Their final work, their science birthed child, was given the singular task to carry out revenge for two parties. The Shinra Science department and General Sephiroth.
