The Legend of the Knights of the Dragon God Long ago, there was a unified nation known as Burmecia that stretched across the Daines-Horse Basin and the mighty Vube Desert. The people living there were a resiliant species, adapted to living in the mountainous regions of the Versias with their powerful leaping skills. However, all was not well within the Royal Court of the Burmecian captial. A section of the Court, mostly hailing from the western regions of Burmecia called Cleyra, were vastly opposed to the Court's desire to create a strong warrior caste in the face of increasing power from their two neighboring countries, Alexandria and Lindblum. The two sides bickered and argued for many years, causing a rift in society between those who opted for peace and those who wanted protection through strength. The Cleyran group, finally pushed too far after being threatened with contempt of the King's will, declared themselves independent of the Court and left. The court members and other officials gathered in the Vube Desert and formed their own governing body and state, simply called Cleyra. Many Burmecians left the captial to support their leaders, and the incident was recorded as the Cleyran Separation Crisis after thing settled down. A few years later, the Burmecian King initiated a mission to reform his strongest warriors into an elite fighting force made strictly to protect the court. The King selected five of their most powerful Royal Guards and ordered them to take a pilgrimage to the southern mountains. The five warriors were renound for their battle prowess, skilled with any matter of weapon and loyal beyond death to their king. Zagan, an expert tactician and strategist. Cristin, the beautiful and stealthy protector. Derim, an arrogant but powerful swordsmaster. Threva, trained highly in the art of magics. Dragos, a natural leader with innate fighting skill. These five warriors immediately gathered their armors and weapons and left for the mountains, hoping their treck would prepare them to become stronger defenders of the court. The journey was filled with hazards: fighting dangerous monsters and fierce storms across the Basin, then climbing the steep slopes of the treacherous Aerbs Mountains. After months of difficult travel, the five warriors ascended to the hightest peak of the Aerbs and were presented with a glorious view of the world. It was there that the five contructed their home and began training in the thin mountain air. For a long year, the warriors exercised their bodies through combat and trained their minds by reading sacred texts and meditating. They were soon able to leap into the skies with such power that they could bind the very winds to their desire and use it to aid them in battle. The five were becoming very skilled in their art, but none so much as their eldest comrade, Dragos. Dragos was able to jump into the sky and ride the winds, and could throw his weapons down to the earth as if hurtling meteors from the heavens. The bonds between comrades grew stronger than the thickest steel, and soon the time to leave was coming. It was one night, just before the warriors were to leave for home, that Dragos was gifted with a vision by a goddess to travel to a great chasm in the mountains. Possessed by the fervor of the dream, Dragos insisted that they travel to the east in search of the god that spoke to him. The others agreed, and they again took to the road. The five fought their way east, trudging through snow and storms, all following Dragos as he moved with great determination. A month later, they arrived at a steep cliff and faced a great crater in the mountains, the pit covered in the thickest forest and rivers pouring into its center. It was then that a great beast appeared to them, a dragon of proportions unlike anything they had faced, glowing with a mysterious light. Dragos, nearly losing his very mind in his triumph, immediately proclaimed the beast to be the god that guided him, and he asked her what she wanted. The beast god, happy that the five made the dangerous trip, asked of them which had the courage to do battle with her. They all agreed to the challenge, and soon began a duel of skills. Zagan, Cristin, Derim, and Threva all took their turns in fighting the beast god, but they all were defeated soundly in one blow from her claws. Dragos, however, fought the dragon god and matched her strength. For one day the beast god and the Burman warrior fought, until Dragos struck a fatal blow to the dragon. The goddess, impressed with the power Dragos and his comrades possessed, agreed to give the man a gift. First, however, the goddess spoke of the courage the four others gained. Zagan, despite his talent for plans and strategy, had a terrible memory. His stay with the others had taught him to remember his important works, and that through constant routine, had achieved a renewed mind. Cristin, stealthy and silent in her ways, was unable to act differently when outside of battle. By being surrounded by fellow warriors and friends, she had learned to put aside her cloak of indifference and could interact with everyone as closest companions. Derim, as strong as any warrior, was too prideful of his skill to appreciate anything else. Learning new skills and being shown new things made him put aside his pride and learn to be humble in the presence of others. Threva, powerful of mind and matter, was insecure and unable to act on her own accord. Being shown by others how to rely on one's own strengths made her realise that she was master of her own life and not bound by her sacred magical arts. Dragos, though a powerful and noble man, was always afraid of failing his friends and his charges. By helping others and being helped himself, he grew to accept his limitations and swore to appreciate the efforts he could do. After the goddess made her speech, she asked Dragos what he wanted in his life most of all. Dragos, being reflective of his life, wished that he could forever protect his king and kingdom, his friends and loved ones. Pleased with his choice, the goddess gave to him a mighty lance blessed by the gods, bearing the name Calamity, Giver of Judgement. The goddess them gave him the knowledge of his weapon, so that no one could outmatch his ability. Once done, the goddess transported the five warriors to the gates of Burmecia, promising to watch over them and to aid them in their times of need. At that moment, the five warriors decided to name themselves the Knights of the Dragon God, or simply Dragon Knights, in reminder of what they experienced. The Dragon Knights all returned to the Burmecian court and told their story to the King. The King, wise and trusting in the words of his knights, reveled in their newly found strength and made their title of Dragon Knights official. Since then, the Royal Gaurds were disbanded and replaced by the Dragon Knights, where only the most experienced and powerful Burmans were able to join. The five warriors were later declared heroes of Burmecia after living their lives out in service of the King. Dragos' powerful lance, Calamity, was honorarily given to the strongest of these knights as a gift for their service. The Mist War (1771 - 1774), the unification of the three great nations October 13th, 1771: A number of the divided territories and regional Lords declared war amongst one another after disputes over land claims boiled out of control between them. Lindblum, one of the largest and prominant kingdoms of the continent, was hit hardest by the erupting battle as it's many allies were pummeled by opposing forces to the north and east. The current Regent, Cid VIII, declared war against all territories that didn't surrender their forces and become neutral to either side. Lord Edward Belgara, one of the landlords of the strongest territories of the continent, was vastly opposed to having his position taken away anyone, and forced his people into a battle against Lindblum. With numerous battalions of mobile knights on Chocobo's, he was able to rapidly move across the land and use guerilla operations against Lindblum's less maneuverable foot soldiers. In Alexandria, the territories on the two heights rose up against their overseers in the capitol in a civil split. The Alexandran forces were able to stave the initial assaults on the captial, and then moved in to clear out agressive groups in the basins and heights. Burmecia and Cleyra, having few separate territorial leaders, was affected little by the war. Their Dragon Knights, however, were temporarily used as additional support for both Lindblum and Alexandria in the first weeks of the war's beginning. March 19th, 1772: Burmecia's Dragon Knight's, having fought bravely in the battles near Treno and the townships around it, retreated in face of being run down by the monster trainers and their hordes of beasts that defended the sleepless city. The Alexandrian forces, having relied heavily on the Burman's quick incisionary skills to weaken the inner strength of the enemy forces, were routed and forced back to the hillocks and mountains of the Versais with heavy losses. The Alexandrian monarchy accused the Dragon Knight's of betraying their soldiers, however the Burmecian King was able to escape any blame by reminding them that the Knights acted under separate authority of the Alexandrian army. Alexandria resented Burmecia for it's cowardice, planting the seeds of mistrust between the two kingdoms in future years. June 22nd, 1772: Regent Cid VIII amassed his regiments of soldiers and personally led them into battle at the capitol city of King Edward's territory, Mobliz. After weeks of hard pressed battle throughout the streets, the captial was taken and Edward's forces were scattered across his territories. Edward, later learned, had killed his family to prevent them from subverting his rule over his people, blaming it on Lindblum and using it to fuel his resistance against Cid VIIIs people. This led to the center of the territory to collapse, weakening it greatly. September 30th, 1772: Alexandria finally exponged the remaining resistance forces from the Treno territory, reclaiming it under their rightful rule and command. The head of the revolt, Halvert Kington, was executed for crimes against the monarchy. His son, James Kington, renamed himself James King as a mockery of the imposed rule by Alexandria, reminding them that he was "King" of his citizens. December 31st, 1772: Cid VIII was injured and his men brutally attacked by a seabound navy in the coastal territory of Kohlingen. Having evacuated loyalists in the city, the navy used cannons on hasity made ships to level the city and hoped to kill the Regent who was leading the attack once again. Retreating in the face of superior firepower, the Lindblum armies were forced to rethink their strategies with other battles knowing that the ocean would be trouble for them. This day was known as Bloody Year's Eve. Alexandria, horrified by the assassination attempt, pledged to use it's waterbound fleets to help combat the last vestiges of the Kohlingen military. Loyalty between the two nations rose, several treaties signed between the leaders to declare neutrality between their warring nations after centuries of battle between rival leaders. April 15th, 1773: Alexandria reclaimed the Dali territory after it's leader surrendered and allowed proper control to return. The vast farmland territory was unable to match the strength of Alexandria's military, and had been unable to halt it's advance to each town and village. Leadership was changed, the original lord Jeffries Kalm sentenced to exile in the northern island colonies. Lindblum brought to bear it's first Airship Division of four brand new Viltgance Airships on the renegade territories on the far eastern leaders in the Aerbs mountains. With cannons spewing out death and mayhem, the mountainside forces of the rouges were torn apart and forced into surrender. Cid VIII personally met with the leader, Jobe Donevel, and signed the surrender documents in a highly pulbic affair at the Lindblum capital. May 1st, 1773: Alexandria suffered a near assassination of it's royal family by a hired mercenary from Treno's leader, James King. The assassin, although killing their two daughters Sapphire and Ruby, was slain by the current General of capital forces, Cecilia Rose. Cecilia, suffering a mortal wound, was kept alive for two days before passing on. The Royal family, although mourning over the loss of their beloved daughters, took joyous praise in celebrating the bravery of the deceased General. Since then, the uniform and sword, Save the Queen, have been handed down to each following General of the army, as well as the new nickname popular with the citizens, the Rose of May. James King was brought to the capital and executed for his betrayal, and the next leader was installed with knowledge that he wouldn't try the same. However, the man also changed his last name to King, as a hint to the monarchy that Treno would forever be a distant ally to it's rule. July 18th, 1773: The Alexandrian navy met with the Kohlingen navy in a brutal ocean battle. Alexandria, having military grade ships and cannons, was easily able to overcome the modified and sometimes half wrecked fleet of Kohlingen's last rebels. Heavy losses on both sides, Alexandria came on top and declared the fleet destroyed and the Territory official part of Lindblum's command. November 12th, 1773: King Edward, although considered to be in hiding and unable to act, made an earth-shattering attack on the Lindblum captial with his own Airship. Having outmaneuvered the bulky Viltgance Division in the classic style of his once proud Chocobo Knights, he used small cannons to attack the castle. The Airship, from what has been determined to be structural failure from too much stress by cannon use, slowly lost power and crashed against the cliffs of the Lindblum Plateau, exploding and killing Edward Belgara. Cid VIII, using this moment as much as he could, restored some order to the territory Edward once lorded over. Alexandria lead a final assault on the forces in the far western basin that continued to rebel and attack now loyal towns. The leader, Sarisa Melda, led her men in a suicidal charge against Alexandria's now veteraned forces, killed to the last. With that final battle complete, the Alexandria territory was once again whole, occupying the entire land in the center of the Aerbs and Versia mountain ranges. Januray 3rd, 1774: Cid VIII, with surprising aid from small Qu mage teams, flushed out the final forces of the Byan territory and ended their struggle. Signing peace treaties with the surviving leaders in the remote lands, Cid VIII declared an end to the fighting and unified his kingdom from one end of the Versias to the other, making his kingdom the largest ever on the Mist Continent. The Treaties with Alexandria were looked on with more diplomatic discussions, hopes for a permanent peace between the two to be forged. Burmecia, although willing to ally itself with the two surviving nations, declared it's official stance as neutral to both, wishing to keep to old isolationist views set by older kings. The Mist Wars were declared officially over on January 8th, 1774.
