Saab JAS-239 "Griffin"

The Griffin fighter was developed for the CED's "last hit" force. After heavier vessels and fighters are done with their part of a battle, Griffins are sent in. Their small size, light weight and powerful engines, together with state-of-the-art armament, allow to sneak into places where the rest of the foe's forces may be hiding and that are too difficult for larger fighters to get in. The Griffin can out-manoeuvre and out-speed nearly any fighter ship in existence, and can easily compete with most robots out there. Its only disadvantages are the fragile shielding and a small secondary armament load. The secondary projected role for Griffin is pinpoint strike and enemy space penetration. The aerodynamic shape of the fighter is dictated by the need to operate in atmosphere.
Part of the Griffin fleet is dedicated to the last-wave Earth defence force. If the impossible happens and all of the Earth's defences fail, the Griffins will scramble to meet the enemy or fight him inside the atmosphere.
