General
Q: I get a "soar.dll not found"
error. What's wrong?
A: That's the "silly mistake #1".
That means your mod was installed into a directory different from the Descent
3's one. Check where the mod's shortcut points to and move the files if
necessary. This will screw up the uninstaller's path, but you can always
fix that in the registry.
Q: When I run descent 3.exe (d3pyromania.exe,
d3shipyard.exe, etc.), Descent 3 either shows strange errors, or crashes
on level start. The ship selection is messed up.
A: Descent 3 loads in external files
first. This means that if you've any external table files (extra.gam, table.gam)
used by Descent 3 itself, they will override the internal *.hog data. Same
goes for any kind of file - a pyrogl.oof placed externally will override
every Pyro-GL model for every mod installed. The solution is to either
delete or move the *.gam files elsewhere.
Q: Missiles/Cannons don't autoswitch
when ammo/energy runs out.
A: This is a combined Outrage/SDT
bug caused by technical issues. No fix for it yet. Anyway, it'll only add
to the realism.
Q: After applying the latest development
patch or installing the latest Pyromania release, weird things happen (Descent
3 crashes on level change/game load, robot/ship models get replaced). How
to fix that?
A: That's not as much a bug as it
is an internal Descent 3 "feature". A game saved with a previous table
will have problems if table entries were introduced/changed in the new
table file. You've to restart your singleplayer game and save games with
the new release.
Q: I can't join a Descent 3 server
from Pyromania!
A: To play Pyromania, both the server
and the client
have to be running the same version of
the modification.
Q: I can't run Descent 3 after installing
Pyromania or one of the PM mini-updates; D3 shows a black screen and crashes
upon startup.
A: Chances are you deleted a file
required by Descent 3. If Pyromania works well, but Descent 3 doesn't start
up, it's very probable that you deleted either extra13.hog or extra.hog.
You may get yourself into trouble if you rebuild one of the .hog files
needed by Descent 3 with the HOG2 Workshop utility - it's known to corrupt
.hogs.
Technical
Q: How do I run Pyromania without
having to use the fastidious launcher?
A: You can run pyro.exe directly
from the command-line. Check the command-line
reference for details.
Q: Does Pyromania interfere in any
way with the default Descent 3 install?
A: Pyromania does not modify files
or interfere in any way with Descent 3. So don't blame us if you deleted
something and Descent 3 suddenly stopped working.
Q: Pyromania or Descent 3 refuses
to run, saying "The directory is in use, please use -tempdir to set a different
temp directory".
A: There can be two reasons. One
- you are already running either another copy of D3/PM, or a dedicated
server. A second reason is that Pyromania or Descent 3 crashed and left
temporary files in its cache directory. Under NT, this is set by the temp=[drive:\directory]
environment variable (run the "set" command in a console or check Control
Panel/System/Environment Settings). Under windoze 9x/Me, this is usually
c:\windows\temp (or %windir%\temp), unless the set temp=[drive:\directory]
command overrides it in autoexec.bat. Just delete all the files in your
temp directory and you're set. A good idea might be to use the -tempdir
[drive:\directory] D3 command-line parameter to set the cache directory;
especially if you have a second drive, running D3/PM from one drive and
using a second one for cache will speed up loading/saving times.
Q: Pyromania or Descent 3 crash
on level load or ship selection! What's wrong?
A: You very likely have a table.gam
or extra.gam placed in your Descent 3 directory by another mod. Rename,
move or delete the offending
file and everything should work.
Q: Pyromania is slower than Descent
3!
A: Due to the higher-quality and
more complex models, detailed skins and sounds, it is. However, if you've
not upgraded your box to something faster than that four-years-old Celeron,
you should. Upgrades are cheap nowadays...
Singleplayer
Q: The robots are shooting "live"
(full damage) rounds! What's wrong?
A: That's not a bug, that's a feature.
Singleplayer now IS challenging.
Q: I drop the Advanced Mine (slot
8 secondary on Pyro-GX), but nothing happens!
A: The Advanced Mine is a smart
weapon. When an enemy comes in its range, it will speed towards its target
and detonate. The Advanced Mine
will also evade its host ship.
Q: The robots are too tough!
A: Now you have the agility, speed
and armament to deal with them. Just move, dodge and shoot.
Q: Why does Helix not appear in
singleplayer?
A: We did try to make Helix work
in singleplayer, but it turned out to be too buggy, so nah, you only have
it in Pyromania.d3m.
Multiplayer
Q: What features does Pyromania.d3m
have that do not appear in singleplayer?
A: DMFC Helix and Spreadfire (OSIRIS
Spreadfire appears in singleplayer) cannons and in-game ship selection.
Q: How do I make my multiplayer
settings be loaded automatically by
Descent 3/Pyromania?
A: Save them with a "default.mps"
filename.
Q: Multiplayer Pyromania lags more
than Descent 3. Why?
A: While we did try to optimise
Pyromania's multiplayer mode, we're not paid and we're not full-time developers.
There's just no way we can afford more extensive testing, etc. Support
us with money - then you'll get exactly what you want :-P .
Q: I get killed too fast!
A: Don't whine. Pyromania is as
close to air combat as Descent can get. While it is true that killing and
dying is easier in Pyromania, you can also inflict serious pain on others,
no matter what your ship is. Just react quickly and know when and which
weapons to use.
Q: Won't Spreadfire lag a multiplayer game
to hell?
A: Spreadfire and Helix are not laggy
as long as you play Pyromania Anarchy (Pyromania.d3m). Actually, that's
the only place where Helix appears. Spreadfire and Helix were written in
such a fashion that they're not any more laggy than other weapons, however
if you play a game mode other than Pyromania Anarchy, the DMFC version
of Spreadfire will be loaded, and that one is laggy. |
