There are many different ways to survive on Vala. In fact, you don't even need a job - the fruit that grows everywhere is free, and anyplace that isn't currently built upon is also free, so a little hard labor and then you're living well. However, considering how much Valari love ornamentation (not to mention the clothes issue; Taeri leaves aren't as pretty or durable as made clothing), professions were sure to spring up. There is no currency on Vala; all exchanges are made by bartering goods or services. These are some options, but not the only ones.
Hai'dien: The bonded riders of Raaka, Hai'dien are responsible for many things. Their most important task is to serve as liasons between Raaka and Valari, but they also aid wounded or orphaned Raaka, drive back creatures from the Ground Below (with Raaka help), and provide rescue services for the people of Vala City. They can be viewed as combination police, firefighters, and EMTs. For more details, go here.
Corathi: The Corathi live on the wild side, literally. They specialize in operating in the Lower Canopy and the Ground Below; they bring back stones, gems, and occasionally metals from the forest floor. They also guide larger expeditions of gem-collectors or explorers, and if they're not too late they rescue foolhardy or unlucky people who end up in the Lower Canopy. For more details, go here.
Council Member: The Council is the closest thing to a government in Vala City. The council passes the few loose laws of the city, organizes public building projects such as new bridges or platforms, and serves as a tribunal when somebody is accused of wrongdoing, or when an argument grows to the point it needs an outside mediator. The size of the Council is flexible, but all members must vote on admitting a new member.
Crafter: Crafters are the artisans who weave, dye and sew clothing, create jewelry, carve wood, or make other useful or decorative things for their fellow citizens.
Gemhunters: These people go down to the Ground Below, with Corathi guides, to search for the beautiful gems used in jewelry up above. They have to be strong-willed to withstand the darkness below!
Breeder: While any pet can be captured in the wild, truly quality animals can only be found in a breeder's home. These Valari love the animals they work with, and try hard to preserve and enhance their favorite aspects of these animals.
These are not the only things a Valar can do; they can specialize in anything, from hunting to building. Remember, you have a whole world of options available!
