Capcom has many big franchises. One of the biggest is Resident Evil. Resident Evil first appeared on Playstation in 1996. The game was made too scare you and that’s what exactly what it did. After the success of Resident Evil, Capcom kept going with the series. Resident Evil 2 came out, followed by Resident Evil 3: Nemesis all the way to Dreamcast with Code Veronica. Nintendo did see Resident Evil games but they were all ports for the N64. Well, not too long ago, Nintendo and Capcom signed a deal which would guarantee a whole rack of Resident Evil games. Capcom has decided to start back with their first game, Resident Evil 1 and work their way up.

This is where Resident Evil 1 comes in. It will be the first Resident Evil game to hit the Cube and will be followed up by many others. Resident Evil 1 isn’t what we saw years ago for Playstation; Capcom has completely remade the game. The storyline and mansion layout will be very similar but the game guarantees more. New zombies, puzzles, room and much more gives many people a reason to come back and play this one again.

Resident Evil sure packs a punch and gives your money worth:

bulletResident Evil 1 remade onto Gamecube.
bulletExplore a mansion filled with dead zombies, rotting dogs, man-eating sharks and much more.
bulletPlay in a third-person perspective
bulletMany reasons that will keep you coming back for more including ten different endings and the opportunity to play as either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine.
bulletSurround Sound
bulletUse many different types of weapons to kill off the foe.
bulletNew defensive weapons to help you get away from the enemy.
bulletNew mind boggling puzzles.
bulletFirst Gamecube game to use 2 disks.
bulletRealistic graphics that will keep you shocked.
bulletThe element of horror is added very nicely, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

As you can see, Resident Evil delivers quite nicely.

Gameplay

After slipping the Resident Evil disc into your Gamecube, you will see a nice little movie footage in the beginning. You’ll see a zombie rising and quickly get shot down, which is nice and can be skipped. The main menu only consists of three options, New Game, Load Game and Options. Pick “New Game” and be prepared, you’ve entered. You’ll also come across two options; the first option is harder than the second one. Choose the second one if you’re a beginner.

The game starts out with a nice FMV, which has been completely changed from the original. The Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S) are sent out investigate the Arclay Mountain area by the Raccoon City Police Department. After a terrible crashing, another S.T.A.R.S unit are sent to help. This is where the game stars.

You start out in the helicopter, scanning the area. After awhile, you decide to land. The group wonders around, not knowing the danger that awaits them. Before you know it, one of your team members is being eaten alive by a bunch of rotting dogs. You run for your life and to save yourself, you run into a big eerie mansion. You think your safe … but you quickly learn that you were wrong.

The gameplay is fun, even if you’ve experienced the original. There’s a lot of new stuff this time and with the addition of Crimson Heads and smarter A.I, the game’s difficulty is definitely notched up. For example, running from a zombie may not always be the smartest thing. Sometimes they will follow you right into the next room. Watching a zombie burst through the door is heart pounding. Crimson Heads don’t waste any time at all. Unlike regular zombies, Crimson heads are fast. The can usually hear the groaning of the Crimson and the footsteps racing closer. They usually run up to you and slash you with their nails … or claws is that’s more appropriate. Resident Evil 1 for Gamecube gives you the opportunity to take control of two characters, Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. It is harder to beat the game with Chris, since he starts out with a survival knife and can only hold a few items. Other differences between the two characters include different endings, defensive weapons and attributes.

The main goal of the game is too make search for your friends and trying to keep alive. You’ll encounter zombies, crimsons, dogs and all sorts of other things. Luckily, you’ll also find herbs and first aid kits, which restore your health. You’ll also find different guns and ammo so you can try to keep alive. Depending on the gun, it may take one shot or a dozen shot to kill your enemy. Defensive weapons are also scattered around the mansion. The ink ribbon will help you save; remember that there are only limited supplies of ink ribbons in the mansion. Once you run out, there all gone.

Playing Resident Evil requires skills and thought. You’ll only be able to carry a few items with you, so make smart choices. Enemies usually show up at the least expected places, so always keep alert. If you ever do run into a zombie, shoot it to the ground and run! Don’t worry about it getting back up because if you shoot it back down again, it will be a pissed of crimson.

For a game with no multiplayer mode, Resident Evil packs a lot of replay value. You can get certain cheats and codes if you beat the game under a certain amount of time. To experience all the endings of the game, you’ll have to play carefully. And even after you beat it with Jill and you’re about to call it a day, you still have Chris to go. And besides two different characters, there are also different difficulty modes. If you think easy mode was hard … wait until you play the others.

Graphics

The graphics will be the first thing you notice. Before I got the game, I thought all the in-game screenshots were just FMV sequels, I never thought the game could look that good. Surprisingly, I was wrong. Resident Evil looks great. The details in the game are amazing.

Every room has its own details. You’ll see moths circling lamps and blood on the walls. The mansion is definitely detailed. You can see the shadows of your character against the mansion walls.

Probably the most amazing graphics in the game are the characters. Jill, Chris, the zombies, dogs and whatever else you encounter all look great. Zoom up shots of Chris or Jill will definitely amaze you. They look so real, with everything on them detailed. Jill and Chris react differently, depending on their health. You might see Jill joyfully running around the mansion until she is stuck by a crimson. Than you’ll see her favor her stomach as she limps across the mansion, slowly. The zombies are also greatly detailed. You can see the rotting flesh on them and their deformed faces as they approach you. When you pull out a gun and shoot a zombie, you can see the blood splatter out and see the pain the zombie is suffering. After you have “killed” a zombie, you’ll see a pool of blood surround it.

Probably the most stunning thing in the game is when you reach the sharks. The water is realistic and the sharks look amazing. You can see the water move as you walk through it.

The lighting affects also add a sense of horror to the game. Some rooms aren’t lit at all and others are lit so you can see some of the things in the room. Some rooms, you have to light on your own.

The graphics really help to scare you. The level of realism is definitely high; you will be scared.

Controls

Probably one of the hardest things to get used to is the control. The controls will probably feel awkward when you start the game. It takes about 30 minutes or so to get used to the controls and even then, they’re not great. Even after you mastered the controls, you may find yourself going the opposite direction. Here’s a quick overview of what buttons do what:

bulletAnalog: Move your character
bulletR Button: Get into an offensive position.
bulletA Button: Scan items around you, open doors, etc. If you’re holding down the R Button, press A to shoot.
bulletY Button: Bring up menu. Exit menu.
bulletC Stick: Quick 180 degree turn.

Those are the buttons you will be using the most in the game.

Sound

The sound adds another element to the game. When the music is calm, you know there’s nothing to be afraid of. When you hear the music crank up, you’ll know something is coming. Probably the scariest sound is hearing a crimson running across the room to get you, moaning and groaning as it approaches you.

The voice acting isn’t pathetic but isn’t great either. It definitely sounds better than the original but compared to other games that use voice acting, it doesn’t seem real. There isn’t too much thought and feeling put behind the words. You won’t be able to tell when Jill or Chris are scared because we all know they are. Thumbs Up

Graphics – 9.0

The graphics are amazing but you will notice a pause between videos, which is annoying.

Sound – 8.9

The sound is great. You’ll hear zombies moan as they walk towards you or the sound of a crimson running at you. You’ll hear dogs growl at you or large snakes hiss. The sound is great.

Gameplay – 8.5

Even if you’ve played the original version, the game is still packed with surprises. You’ll be playing for endless hours as you fight enemies, explore the mansion and solve different puzzles.

Controls – 7.9

The controls aren’t great. Capcom could have definitely spent more time in this area but sooner or later, you’ll get used to it.

Overall - 8.9

With a huge drought in the first two quarters of 2002, Resident Evil should feel your hunger until games like Star Fox or Mario hit shelves.
