Three hoop games have embraced Gamecube so far. One of these was an exclusive while the other two were imports. NBA Courtside, Street and 2k2 are all great games but if it comes down to one, NBA 2k2 should be your choice. NBA 2k2 has it all, various modes, nice graphics, nice replays, and a great fun factor. Here are some of the stuff you'll find in Sega's NBA 2k2...

Features

bulletUp-to-date rosters, uniforms, signature moves, and NBA rules for the 2001-2002 season
bulletGreat graphics, you can tell who a player is just by looking at their face
bulletAn accurate broadcast
bulletA street mode with real life courts including Venice Beach, Rucker Park and a lot more.
bulletAll your favorite NBA teams and more including the All Star teams from the 70's, 80's and more.

Gameplay

The game plays great but if you have been previously playing Courtside, 2k2 may take a little while to get used to. The AI was much improved compared to the sad AI of courtside. If your playing 1 on 1 against AI, you must make sure you don't screw up to many times because before you know it, your down by 10. The AI really has strengthened up their defense and their offense isn't anything to make fun about it earthier. AI usually stall and pass the ball around until they are pretty sure that they will make the basket. Unless you’re really good, setting rookie as your difficulty is recommended and will help you in the long run.

Another real great feature in 2k2 is the crossover feature. If you want to create space to shoot the ball or want to juke out the defense and take it to the net, crossovers are great. Just be careful though, crossovers can sometimes end you out of bounds.

Yet another feature added to NBA 2k2 is the C-stick passing. The C-Stick passing in 2k2 isn't as marvelous as the passing in Courtside but it's okay for starters. Pressing Up C will pass the ball closest to the net. This can be great if you don't have enough time and want to get the ball in.

Graphics

The graphics are great in the game, not excellent but great. Courtside does do a better job capturing facial expressions than 2k2 does. I think that Sega should have spent more time adding things to this import, which would have made it a great game. The replays are nice the first few times but after a while it can get really annoying, you can turn them off in options. The dunks are also executed smoothly but compared to Courtside; they’re not that pretty. You'll see players like Shaq dunking it into the net, even players such as Iverson! You might find a few glitches that won't take the fun out of the game but are big enough to point out. For the most part, NBA 2k2 does a great job with graphics but there if definitely areas to approve on.

Sound

Most sport titles have nice rap themes in the beginning with a lot of footage playing, 2k2 is no different. A lot of sport games also have really annoying announcers that repeat the same line over and over again; 2k2 is different in their category. 2k2 provided a lot of great commentary that's accurate and adds life to the game. No more cheesy phrases, this game rises above all the other NBA titles on Gamecube in this category.

Controls

For the most part, controls have been covered. The controls are okay but I was really hoping for the same C-Stick passing found in courtside. Otherwise, the controls aren't too shabby.

Comments

If you want an accurate NBA game with many options and modes to keep you coming back for more, get this game. The game is challenging, fun, and gorgeous. The "Coach Mode" allows you to pick different plays and decide who covers who on defense. Unlike Courtside, players will get tired in the game and will have to be submitted, no longer allowing players to lead the team with star players. The franchise mode is a great start and, if done right, have a real potential to become great. So, if you like basketball and you own a Cube, grab this game quick.
