At E3 2001, Rare was surprising gamers left, right and center.
First, they startled the gaming world be released Star Fox Adventures:
Dinosaur Planet. After that was all said and done, they unveiled Kameo.
Everyone was in awe. Rare had surprised us with gameplay that no one had ever
saw, and everyone was intrigued!
Features
Gameplay
Kameo is a third-person RPG/Adventure based on the life of a young and
extremely gifted girl. She must search out and rescue six 'Elemental Children'
all the while saving the world and defeating huge bosses. However, that is not
all. She also must capture and raise small creatures and take care of them
until they are grown. Once they are old, and big enough she can release them
to attack with her against her enemies.
However, Kameo also has the option not to release her
captured animals. Instead, she can transform herself into them, giving her
special powers like flying, extra strenght, etc. This gives the game alot more
depth, and strategy. Overall, Kameo: Elements of Power has a very unique style
of play, which many Gamecubers can't wait to see and use!
Controls
The controls for Kameo are quiet simple. The analog stick is your control or
move button just like most platform games, however, the C-stick lets you move
the camera whereever you desire, giving alot of control for how you want to
view the game. The A-button is your action button; jump, hop, fly, swim and
other actions. The B, X and Y-buttons let you quickly select certain monster
types which you have captured. This is similar to the style intoduced by
Zelda: OoT.
Graphics
From what we were able to see at E3, Kameo has great graphics. The enviroments
are beautiful, with an impressive draw distance. There was no fog, and steady
framerates. The water effects were almost equivalent to those shown in Wave
Race: Blue Storm. However, after seeing the graphics from Pikmin, we are
hoping that Kameo can maybe step it up a notch, and produce those types of
graphics. However, Kameo did have some awesome effects like motion blur and
heat distortion. When a fire-breathing enemy laid an attack on us, you could
see the air around the flame distort and go all waving. AWESOME!
Overall
Kameo: Elements of Power is a great looking game. Great control, beautiful
levels, awesome effects and and very intriging gameplay make Kameo a must
have. However, it isn't set for release until 2002. When in 2002 is unknown,
but the sooner, the better.
