Dragon hatchings can be very complicated and confusing events, both in character and out of character. There are many things to be aware of, from how things often occur in character, to expected behavior on an out of character level. All of these things mesh into a whole that makes things easier, once you know how to react upon the Sands.

During a dragon hatching, the sands are typified by chaos. As the eggs hatch, the dragonets emerge needing food, and as clumsy as they are, it's not easy for them to move around. This is often where people get hurt, as a dragonet collides with them and their youthful claws gouge into their flesh, or their weight causes a limb to snap. Hatchings are described over and over again within the books as something that simply happens without any real order, and this is something to be remembered. With the chaos on the sands, the candidates often split up into groups; thus, what is seen or said by one group isn't necessarily noticed by another.

You, the player, should prepare for things out of character, before the hatching starts. If you are unable to make the hatching, you should arrange to have someone else puppet you; be sure to send mail to *Hunt so that Search Committee is aware of this arrangement. Your robe must be described before you go out onto the sands; candidates do not walk onto the sands in normal clothing. Out of character comments, such as the OOC command, should not be used on the Sands; they only add spam for everyone. Poses should be kept relatively short, to avoid spam and lag problemsfour lines is a good estimate to aim for. If you do make a mistake or typo, please use the following format to correct it:
@emit s/ < typo >/ < correction >.

Now, onto in character actions. Most candidates tend to group up, three or four to a group, though this isn't necessary; it helps to give ideas for posing while waiting for eggs to hatch. It's rarely possible to hear things outside your aegis with the chaos upon the sands, so noticing that Bob impressed halfway across the Sands is possible, but hearing his dragon's name isn't a surety in the least, unless the other candidate, now weyrling, literally shouts it. Another thing to remember is that Impressing is one of the most life-altering experiences in your lifeAnne literally described it as orgasmic, though we hope you do not literally role play in that vein. However, simply nodding and patting the dragonet is not suggested eitherfor obvious reasons.

After Impression, a weyrling should leave his lifemate to the side where the weyrlingmasters are. Food for the new dragonets will be given once they are led off- the Sands after the Hatching, when they are taken to the barracks. From there, the Weyrlingmasters will handle information.
