As a child, Zan admired Sephiroth, longing to become a great Soldier like him. This dream, however, did not appeal to his parents, who wished for him to become a merchant, the family occupation. Nevertheless, he continued to strive for his ultimate dream, training whenever he could in the slums of Midgar. His desire to imitate Sephiroth was so great, that he trained with a long rusty pole he found in the trash heaps, to learn how to weild a sword as large as the Masamune. After a while, however, his parents found out about his secret training and beat him constantly until he was forced to abandon his dream. Afterwards, he became a merchant, alongside his father, trading weapons and armor to the passing warriors and mercenaries.

Later on, quite an expert at negotiating and dealing with goods, Zan encountered a party of adventurers. One was a blue-eyed blonde with spiky hair, carrying an unusually large sword on his back. Another was a large man with a gun grafted on his arm. The third was a long-haired girl wearing fighting gloves. He talked with them and managed to sell a few weapons and materia, but looking at a group of such spirit reawakened Zan's dream of becoming a great fighter and joining Soldier. But he was still confined at home by his parents, and had little to no hope of ever leaving.

One day, when he was returning home from buying new goods, he looked up and caught a glimpse of the trio of adventurers he had seen before... swinging away on a cable. Apparently, they had jumped from the top of the pillar holding up the higher level of Midgar. Seconds later, the pillar collapsed and crushed a part of the Midgar slums, including his home. Although he always wanted to leave his home, he never wanted his parents to die. So he set off, distressed and enraged, searching for the adventurers who caused the pillar to fall. Little did he know that it was actually Shinra's doing.

Along his journey, Zan managed to obtain a custom-made sword similar to the Masamune, and nearly mastered it, naming it the Xaken. In one of the cities, he ran into the Turks and gained much information from them. Tseng, seeing his ability to weild a sword like the Masamune, even invited Zan to join them, but Zan refused, preferring to find Cloud and his group on his own. He went to Nibelheim and talked to some of the people there, where he learned about Sephiroth's insane rampage and plot to destroy the world. After visiting the library in the Nibelheim mansion, he promptly left, on the search for both Cloud and Sephiroth.

Zan was always just one step behind Cloud and his group, but never able to catch them. He knew that somehow, both Cloud and Sephiroth were connected, and he wanted to know how. He also wanted to battle both of them to prove his hard-earned strength to himself and his parents. Unfortunately, he lost hope in ever getting the chance once he learned of Sephiroth's death. From then on, he traveled the land as a mercenary, fighting for money and looking for a way to prove his skill, not yet knowing about Sephiroth's resurrection.

He is pure human, with dark brown eyes and long black hair, which he usually ties to keep it out of his eyes. His face is stern and determined, and fury burns in his eyes, blazing with passion as he brings swift death to his opponents. But outside of battle, he can be quite gentle and patient... even a bit naive, as his fighting spirit settles into sleep, waiting for the next battle.

He wears long, black pants, and a dirty gray long sleeved shirt. Covering that is a thin, black, half-sleeved jacket which goes down to his knees. He also wears gloves to keep a better grip on his weapon.
