FFVII Review

Final Fantasy VII

I'm going to be very straightforward here: I'm an extremely hard reviewer. If you really like this game and you see something in here that you completely disagree with, don't get upset or feel awkward when playing your cherished game. The controversial world of gaming is full of differing opinions, and you have a right to your own. The following is riddled with my mostly facts from the game and has very few opinions within the total text.

There are many SPOILERS ahead. Consider yourself warned!

Content : 7.0/10

The content was original, had plot twists, and kept up the pace. This game is often thought of as the best Final Fantasy. Being the tough reviewer that I am, I must say that, in my opinion , it DEFINITELY is not .

You got to know the characters pretty well, right? Well, I’m afraid that after a while most of the characters lose their importance and are just there. Cait Sith, Red XIII, Vincent (I know that he’s a secret character), and Yuffie (I also know that she’s a secret character, too) just blend into the background for a long while and don’t really come back. Red XIII comes and goes a lot, though.

The bad guy. Everyone loves Sephiroth. I loved him because he killed Aeris. Sephiroth as an enemy , however, sounds strange to me. Sure, he did kill Aeris, but he just seemed confused. Sephiroth was a lunatic. He wasn’t too bad; he was just kinda loopy. His true personality seems to get lost in the midst of all the Sephiroth shrines. Sephiroth was never really that cold. He was actually very kind to Tifa, despite the fact that he killed her dad and burned her town (I realize how stupid I sound). Sephiroth liked talking. A lot. He liked killing, too, but I was never really intimidated by him or even hated him. He was too...human. Not good for the antagonist.

The love triangle. It never really got anywhere. The game just kinda led you on about it and totally ditched you near the end. Cloud and Tifa were all cuddly at the foot of the Highwind, they were going to be in the plane all by themselves, everyone shows up, they beat the enemy, and then what? “I think I can meet her…there.” To see Aeris ?? Huh??

Speaking of which, I’m going to talk about Cloud and Aeris. What about them? They had no connection. There really was no mutual affection between the two. Sure, Aeris liked Cloud a whole lot. Did Cloud like Aeris? I don’t really think so. I do think, however, that he was discovering feelings upon the time of her death, and then he just shrugged them off (not quickly) and replaced them with strong feelings of friendship and gratitude.

Moreover, this game had so many problems with its content that it made me want to slam my head into the TV.

Sound : 8.9/10

The songs were so good! Some were incredibly annoying, like the Golden Saucer theme, which has been stuck in my head for the past seven years. (I put it on the character page for FFVII because I secretly like hearing it now). But…

All of the songs’ (except for Aeris’/Aerith’s theme, One Winged Angel, and the Boss Battle) quality was that of a midi’s--at best. That saddens me, seeing as the majority of the songs were so well-written.

Aeris’/Aerith’s theme. Oh, dear. The focus was clearly on this song and One Winged Angel. After a while, though, I found Aeris’/Aerith’s theme kind of (actually, REALLY) annoying. The same notes were being played again…and again…and again…and again (etc). The midi I found for the song was 19 minutes 42 seconds long, too. Oh, was it painful…

Nobuo Uematsu, you are the king. I’ve got to bow down to you for One Winged Angel. It’s excellently composed! The remixed versions of it, though, slaughter your original version.

Other sounds, like the battle sounds to make it sound more real, were good. They weren't great, but they were at least good.

Graphics : 7.5/10 (an average of the following grades)

Oh, man. I feel so mean for all of the grades I’m giving this game. I’ll go on nevertheless.

Normal graphics: 5.5/10

  • The characters didn’t have a mouth or a nose on their face. They only had eyes--impossibly massive eyes. It looked pretty cute like that, though.
  • The shape of the character’s arms was exaggerated. The shoulder was huge. The bicep was iiiitty bitty. The elbow was enormous. The forearm was puny. The hands were gargantuan. Luckily, though, the legs were done normally.
  • It sure was colorful. I like color. ^___^
  • The characters kinda went into each other. Cloud could reach his arm right into and out of Barret. Oppositely, when the characters reached for each other, they kinda grabbed the air and held on tight, somehow holding another character up anyway. Weird.
  • Battle Graphics: 8.0/10

  • Big improvement! The characters even had their own shadows!
  • The shapes of the characters were kinda…I don’t know how to put it…shapely? Let me explain… The part of the arm above the elbow was quite obviously a cylinder and the part below the below was quite obviously a small, more slanted cylinder. They connected the two with what was obviously a sphere. I’m just being picky, though.
  • FMV Graphics: 9.0/10

  • Now that’s more like it! They look somewhat like humans now!
  • The mouths of the characters were kinda hollow. I noticed that when Tifa opened her mouth, it was just dark, dark blackness with a little white smudge for her teeth. That’s no insult to Tifa; it’s just some weird CG Arts.
  • Battle : 9.0/10

The battles were really fun and enjoyable, but the characters sure were slow. And it got really boring and tedious to level up when the Head Hunters near Mideel were among the best things to level up with. Other than that, not bad at all. I was 8 going on 9 when I played it, so I naturally tried to cast magic just like Tifa did. Luckily for me, it didn’t work.

    Skill Factor : 5.0/10

This game had to be the easiest game I've ever played, including PONG.

When I used Knights of The Round Table, the game was understandably easy. But the next time I played the game, (just to test its difficulty level) it was hardly any harder! In fact, I beat the game in 20 hours! If I had a good weekend with nothing to do, I could beat the game once and then almost again. That's kinda pathetic.

The reason I gave the game anypoints at all was for the Weapons. Now, they were hard. Finally.

Overall : 7.0/10 (not an average of the previous scores)

Despite all of that, I actually kind of enjoyed the game. It just had an incredible amount of problems that's only really noticeable by the people that aren't mesmerized by the "plot". It’s a game that every Final Fantasy gamer should own. If you can see past its myriad of problems, then it’s a great, unforgettable RPG.

To me, though, I was quite surprised that so many people love this game as much as they do. After playing the game, I was still waiting to be blown away and impressed. 'Fraid you'll have to do better than that, Square. Good thing, though, that Square did such a fantastic job on the following Final Fantasies. I've played parts of the earlier Final Fantasies, and I just think that that Final Fantasy VII was a bit of a dip on the rising line of Final Fantasies.

    I may add more later.
