Everyone has a job to do, otherwise how would you live? You are paid according to what your job is. Some jobs have requirements before you can get the job. Also certain jobs require you to be on one specific side and others you can do business with whichever side you want. In parenthesis it will say which side you need to be on. Jobs where you can be on any side you can choose to work for all sides or just whichever sides you choose. The more important the job, the more involved you have to be in the rpg. Someone who is never on cant have a job like Shin-Ra President. So if you want one of the important jobs remember that you have to be an active, involved member. Lastly, some jobs require you to be at a specific location (ex: Sailor would probably be at Junon), and other will station you somewhere.
