The Lost EarthBound Game
The year is 1989. In Japan, a Famicom game has been released that changed RPG games for good. That game was entitled "Mother." The basic story was about a kid from a small town in a modern world who has psychokinetic powers and must save the world. The game was a hit in Japan, spawning toys, manga, and merchandise up the wazoo. Seeing the success, Nintendo of America decided to import this major cash cow to the states.
What Happened?
Well, Nintendo has been diligently working on the translation of the game, and it seems things are ready to go. By this time, it's 1990, the year of the Urkel. It's also the year in which Nintendo of Japan was planning to release it's next console, the Super Famicom.
NOA was nearly done with the translation when they got the news of one of the SFC games in development: Mother 2. The game would feature a similar story, improved graphics, and many different features. NOA decided that they should work on translating Mother 2 with all their effort, and perhaps forget about the outdated Nintendo cartridge...
Our Saviors!
It's 1995. Mother 2 has been released stateside as "EarthBound," and the prototype Mother carts soon found its way into obscurity. While EarthBound had been a HUGE success in Japan, it saw lesser success over here. However, the game had picked up a cult following (blue, blue), and, thanks to the newborn World Wide Web, EarthBound fan sites slowly popped up. One of these was destined to lead them all, but that's another story.
Fast forward to 1999. One of the original prototype carts has been purchased by a group of ROM hackers called "Neo Demiforce." Using the 133t-haXX0r skills of their ancestors, they bore what would become a godsend to EarthBound fans everywhere. The ROM of Mother, nay, the ROM of "EarthBound Zero" found it's way onto the Internet, and was finally played by the masses. And it was good.
The Chosen Ones
It's January 2002, the beginning of a New Year. America's getting it's groove back and Earthbound fans have been given Super Smash Bros. Melee, containing not only many EarthBound elements, but also two songs from Mother. It is a good time, and gravy flows like water.
The Starmen.Net Forums. It's always been a gathering for the EarthBound Community, as it's affectionately known. A topic arises in the midst. It seems like just another RM2K game, hardly worth mentioning. However, its cause is more than that. Eggy has set out to recreate EarthBound Zero, and improve it to the standard EarthBound had set. With an improved story and better graphics, The EarthBound Zero Recreation Project has taken up a great task... to recreate the simple story of a boy from a small town, and turn it into something spectacular.
