HISTORY
In the summer of 1222, and English Lord named Eric Sularit had consummated a relationship with a French herbalist named Francine DeLock. He kept her as a mistress in France while his wife lived in England. The relationship only lasted a few months and ended when Francine had gotten pregnant. When Eric found out that she carried a child, he packed and went home to England. With no one to count on, Francine went home to the woods of the North Province.
Francine's father, a local lord and landowner, was not very happy about the whole affair but he loved his daughter all the same. He brought her back into his home and cared for her as he had always done. In the Autumn of 1223, Francine had a baby boy whom she named Azlin, after her great grandfather.
After the birth of her son, Francine went back to doing herbalism for the local area and started to make money. After 2 years of diligent work, she started to amass a small fortune for herself. Then one day, a messenger came to the door and left a package for her. Inside the package was some really finely cut gems and jewels with a note from Eric that she would be getting a similar package from him every year for her and their child, but in no way could he ever see them. She took all that he sent and put it in a hidden place in the manor to hold for her son until he needed it. Eric continued to send a package for them every year for the next 7 years until his untimely death at the hands of a rival lord put an end to his aid.
For the first 8 years of Azlin's life, he did what was asked of him and did what he was told. He also learned his mother's skills of herbalism among the various other chores of his daily life. At age 10, his grandfather hired tutors to teach him how to read, write and fully speak French, English and Latin. By age 13, he had mastered all 3 languages and was beginning to start Italian, German and Spanish. He mastered those 3 languages in just but 2 years. By age 16, he had been taught everything that is tutors could teach him, but Azlin wanted to learn more.
In 1240, at age 17, he was sent to the University of Paris to learn. His mother started to pull the funds she had set aside and used it for his education. His first year at the university his classmates were extremely jealous of him cause of his learning and mental capacities exceeded their own. Even the professors he studied under were hard pressed to work with him cause he learned 2 to 3 times faster than any other student and could remember anything he had read. By the end of his first year, he was doing second-year student books.
At the beginning of his second year, he was introduced to a reclusive and very selective professor named Johan Mersolot (Mer-so-low). Mersolot gave Azlin a test compromising of 20 areas of knowledge. Azlin passed more than 80% of this test.
Mersolot then invited Azlin to become one of his students, effectively becoming a mentor. Azlin accepted his offer for instead of 6 professors, he would only have 2 or 3. Mersolot taught Azlin at the pace Azlin wanted to learn at and a fast friendship grew between them. After 3 years, Mersolot was the only professor teaching him. After 8 years of being with Mersolot, he was invited to be an Apprentice Professor. Azlin agreed to this and was given full reign of Mersolot's personal library, which was rumored to be the most extensive library in France.
After Azlin became an Apprentice Professor, he started to notice the Mersolot had many late night visitors and that his mentor never went out much during the day. Azlin was very careful of what he said around his mentor and really wanted to stay out of his friend's business, whatever it may be.
In the winter of 1249, some marauders attacked the town where his grandfather and mother's manor was. The marauders tore the town apart, killed most of the town folk and torched most of the buildings. Azlin made all haste to get to his grandfather's manor house but it was nothing but ruins. While picking through the ruins, he found a hidden room that had not been touched. Inside this place was important papers from his grandfather's land ownership and the strongbox which contained about 200 finely cut gems and jewels. Also in the strongbox was a letter from his mother explaining most of this fortune was his from his father, what happened to his father, to use the stones for what he saw fit to survive, and how his grandfather had been paying for his schooling through her. Azlin spent the evening in the burned out ruins and in the morning, packed everything he could salvage onto a cart and went back to Paris. It was during the evening that he would become a mediator, a delegate, a lawyer. No matter how long it took, he would study the ways of negotiation and, very secretly, the ways of assassination (for you cannot have one skill without the other in his mind). When Azlin arrived back in Paris, Mersolot was saddened at what had happened to his friend's family. Mersolot then decided that he would help his friend any way he could. In anything that Azlin did in his life, Mersolot would be there to support him. That night, Mersolot made a decision for his friend, one that would change Azlin forever.
Late one eve after Azlin's return, Mersolot invited Azlin to his private study. When Azlin arrived, he was handed a book and told to study it for he would be quizzed on it the next eve. Azlin took the book and when back to his room. Realizing that the book dealt with mystical powers (something very hard to find), he devoured the information and word within. Cover to cover it was read in just a few hours. The next eve Mersolot quizzed Azlin on what he had read and was astonished that not only could he recite the passages, but remembered all the complex symbolism inside as well. Thus began Azlin's road to Magick.
In Summer 1250, Azlin was summoned to Mersolot's private study late one eve. There he introduced to a beautiful lady named Meerlinda and was left alone with her. She studied Azlin for a few hours, scrutinizing him with her eyes as she asked him questions about his life and quizzing him on Mersolot's teaching methods. She listened very intently to every word Azlin said. After she was done, she properly dismissed him and asked Azlin to please let Mersolot that she wanted to have a few words with him. That was the only time Azlin saw her during her 3-day stay.
In the Spring of 1254, Azlin was invited to Mersolot's private study on a full moon night at Midnight. As soon as the door closed to the study, Azlin was attacked. He felt as though some creature had ripped his throat out and felt the blood drain from his body. The pain was excruciating. He knew that he was going to die when all the pain left, but then he heard Mersolot's voice through the haze. Mersolot told him to recite after him and he may yet live. If one word rang false, he would die. Time stopped for Azlin; he felt nothing but his own slowing heartbeat. Heard nothing but Mersolot's voice and his own, reciting some oath. At certain times during the reciting, Azlin was given a drink of a thick red liquid from a silver chalice. Time still meant nothing and the words of the oath recital became one with Azlin, as if he knew the words all his life, it burned into his mind. Azlin went through this for time unknown but as soon as it was over, Mersolot said one thing to him before he passed out, "Welcome Home Brother."
When Azlin awoke, he was in his bed. Mersolot was sitting in the chair in the corner. After a few moments of silence, Mersolot explained everything that happened over the last 24 hours. Explained to Azlin that he would have to end his professorship at the university so he could learn. Over the next year, Mersolot showed Azlin many wondrous things, but always was told, except for him, never fully trust another member within the clan. Work for the clan, work to better the clan, but never fully trust anyone within the clan for everyone wants to be better than the other. When Azlin asked Mersolot why he was such a good friend to him, he always answered the same, "You will grow within the clan that you will surpass anyone in the clan and become one of great importance within the clan." He was also told of his lineage, Tremere himself to Meerlinda to Mersolot to him.
During the next 100 years, Azlin moved from chantry to chantry. He read volumes of tomes and literature, always remembering his goal of become a mediator. During this time, in kindred society, he was gaining fame for his mediatory skills. For helping various kindred, he was bestowed many "gifts" over time. His power grew, as did his strength. This was a trying time for Azlin also for the Inquisition was in full swing and he watched as Kindred havens and homes were put to the torch. Watched a few chantries burn to the ground while weeping for the lost knowledge within those walls disappear forever. Azlin then started to hide his wealth in places only he knew. started building a vault in the mountains of what would become Switzerland and hiding his most precious books there.
In 1379, a powerful Assimite named Abdul Odlin Azir came hunting for Azlin. Azlin had mediated a problem between 2 other clans that had in effect killed a few Assimites in the end result. Azir wanted to kill Azlin and use Azlin's blood to gain power. Azir made the mistake of thinking that Azlin was a lowly Tremere and the battle that ensued was terrible. Azlin finally ended it by getting the upper hand on a mistake that Azir had made and captured him. while Azir lay incapacitated, Azlin checked his ritual books and discover a ritual thought lost during the Inquisition. This ritual of power transference stated that new powers can be garnered by drinking the blood of a kindred to the point of Amaranth, then saying the Ritual of the Undying flower, you could effectively transfer new powers from one kindred to another, but at the cost of killing the Amaranth kindred. Since Azlin had taken this Assimite in combat, his reasoning was that Azir should die for the unprovoked attack but why not gain power to help in the future just in case of further attacks. The ritual is long and arduous and takes a lot of time to achieve. At the end of the ritual, Azlin was infused with a powerful surge of energy that literally felt like he was burning up inside. His muscles constricted and spasmed, the pain was worse than that of his embrace, and then he passed out. When Azlin awoke some days later, nothing of Azir was left except for dust. After feeding and taking care of business that need to be done, Azlin discovered that he had 2 new powers. The next 3 years were spent mastering these powers.
In 1394, Meerlinda sent a message to Azlin to come and talk with her. In the course of their meeting, she laid out the possible plan for a league to keep kindred safe. Azlin help with some preliminaries of her proposal and left. He never knew what the outcome of the meeting she was proposing in, but he liked the idea of a united kindred league.
In the early 1400's, the formation of the Camerilla takes place and forms the rules of the Masquerade. This is done to stop the Inquisition from actually achieving the total destruction of all kindred.
During the mid 1400's to late 1500's the Renaissance was taking place and Azlin settled in the area between what is France and what will become Germany. Many things happened during this time. Azlin became a Master of the Seventh Circle, but his mediator skills gave him much influence within kindred society. Many times he was asked to oversee the disputes between clans and individuals. He was always impartial and neutral to whoever they were. This got him into minor trouble within his clan cause sometimes the compromise was less for Clan Tremere and more for the other. Tremere himself ordered Azlin to visit him and have a talk during one of his brief periods of wakefulness. This worried Azlin for he thought maybe this was the end of him. Tremere sat in his study with Azlin for almost 2 straight days debating the pros and cons of this mediator status Azlin had acquired. Many outside the study thought the worse for Azlin. But in the end, Tremere granted Azlin the title of "The Wandering Lord". (NOTE: Tremere foresaw the usefulness of a true mediator between clans, for if the clans could trust Azlin, Azlin could be called for major problems in the future between Clan Tremere and other Clans.) With this title, Azlin could go into any chantry and settle any dispute without repercussions from any Regent or Lord. The other Lords understood the meaning of this and took it in stride, this way Azlin could keep his mediator status between all clans and stay neutral.
In 1633, Azlin recieved a message from the Inner Council of Seven. They needed to see him urgently. When Azlin got to Vienna, he was rushed to an audience with them. He was told that his Sire Mersolot had betrayed the Clan by working with the Sabbat and possibly the renegade Goratrix. He was commissioned to find his sire, assess him and make discision on weather these are rumors or truth. If truth, then Azlin was given permission to give Final Death. If rumor, bring Mersolot to the council for explaination. Azlin, with heavy thoughts, accepted the mission. He found Mersolot in the Spring of 1634 committing Diablerie on another Tremere. He could see that the beast had taken hold of him and that he craved blood of other kindred. Without Mersolot seeing him while he drank, Azlin staked Mersolot and incapacitated him. With heavy feelings for what his friend had become, Azlin drew one of his 14" Longtooth Daggers from a boot sheath and saying his goodbyes, cut Mersolot's head off ... inflicting final death to a friend who had gone astray. He took Mersolot's signet and sigil and went back to the Council to report. After the report to the council, word got leaked that Azlin's sire was Sabbat and a Diabolist, which effectively hurt Azlin's status and reputaion for a bit, for if a Sire was Sabbat and Diabolist then childe must also be the same. It took many years for Azlin to put those rumors to rest, but every so often it resurfaces again to plague him.
In the 1700's, nothing much happened for Azlin. He just continued to gain books for his library and collecting gems. By 1798, his vault had close to 30,000 books and an extensive fortune in fine gems and jewels. All the while, still mediating for all the clans to keep peace and the Masquerade together.
In Spring of 1829, Azlin carefully packed his whole vault for transport to the new world. He had help from a local Ventrue, Gangrel and Tremere in transporting it to where Azlin had baught a ship. He acually waited till Summer of 1830 to load the ship. He hired a skilled crew and got a well-known captain to sail him to the new world. For this feat, after the crossing, the crew was well paid and the captain was given the ship. From the docks of New York, all his boxes where put into a wagon train and headed out to Chicago. Once in Chicago, he baught himself some land outside city limits and built him an estate with an underground stone vault to put his books. When he was done, he settled down again and did what he did best, mediate problems.
Azlin did his best to stay as far away from the civil war as possible. It was something that could have destroyed the Masquerade in North America. He heard that many Kindred in the south lost not only their havens, but their lives as well.
In 1922, Azlin met Meerlinda again as she was consolidating herself as Pontifex of North America. She was pleased with how far Azlin had come since the first time they met. She was saddened at what Mersolot had become and that Azlin had to be the one to carry out the sentence. She was in America at that time and could not do it herself. She did tell Azlin that word has spread that the "Wandering Tremere Lord" was in North America and ready to help with problems that arose.
In 1949, Azlin took a train ride to Northern Arizona. Outside a rail town named Flagstaff he baught himself 40 acreas of land in an area called Oak Creek Canyon near a tourist town called Sedona. He built himself a nice home with a full study and adjoining library. When construction was completed, he went back to Chicago and gathered all his belongings, selling the lands and buildings there, and railed everything to Flagstaff in 2 boxcars. It took the hiring of 8 moving trucks to move everything from Flagstaff to his new home. Then spent a year setting up his library and started living as a recluse and teacher for those few Tremere sent to him.
In 1952, Azlin was summoned before the Coucil of Seven. While there, Azlin handed over a book of 5 new rituals that he had designed. The Council gave Azlin 2 newly created Gargoyles for bodyguards. Marcos and Elias where indentured to Azlin for meritous service to the Clan. They flew back to Azlin's home in Arizona where Azlin treated them as equals, not servents. They would die in service to Azlin with no hesitation. The next few years were uneventful.
In 1967, Azlin was asked by the Tremere of Antelope Vale to become their Primogen to the Prince. He accepted the offer and took over the Chantry there as well. It was a different pace of what he was used to. Azlin's bodyguard Marcos stayed in Arizona to watch over his house while Elias was with Azlin. A few months passed by and Azlin discovered a large problem in Antelope Vale. The Sabbat had joined forces with a splinter lupine pack of the Black Spiral Dancers. They started to kill Camarillia Kindred and members of a lupine pack named Silver Fangs, along with the kine population. Things were very precarious indeed for the next five years.
