The vegetation thickens near the lake, becoming a meadow that runs along the edge of a narrow, sandy beach. The sands spill down into a crystal lake to the north, lapping against the crater walls to the north and east. A fence runs northwest-southeast, blocking off the lake from the feeding grounds. The grass has a clean green color and is tender with spring. The first water lilies on the pond are blooming in yellow and white, and pink, yellow, and white wildflowers scatter the field. The white climbs even into the trees, with blowing petals amid the new green leaves. The herb garden, still mostly cut back for the winter, is hemmed about with crocuses. The herdbeasts in the fields nearby are lowing during their afternoon feeding.

Obvious Exits:
Bowl Lake
Pwert waves to A'ran as he and Orievith head back to the barracks. "I won't tell Cheni, I promise!" He calls out as the Weyrling heads back to the barracks. Smiling satisfactorily to himself, he starts walking slowly towards the bowl.
Cheni blinks as she hears her name mentioned and looks back over her shoulder as A'ran leaves. "What did he do now, Pwert? I bet he's the one who short-sheeted my sheet, right?" She frowns. "He's such a brat
The hairs on the back of Pwert's neck stand up as he hears Cheni's voice. He nearly jumps out of his skin, and spins around quickly. A panicked look is covering his face, but, he smiles quickly to cover it, "Oh no, no. He didn't pull any pranks on you Cheni. That's not it. He was just talking about you, that's all."
Cheni's eyes narrow but she walks closer, Irenyath heading off to the lake. With each step closer to the young resident, the sweeter Cheni's smile becomes. "You look awfully nervous. You and him weren't sitting here planning a prank on me, now were you?" She holds a hand to her chest in protest. "Nothing was ever proven when I was a candidate that I had anything to do with those boy's sudden bed wetting problems."
Pwert raises his brow, "Oh, really? I didn't realize you were a suspect in that mischief. Besides, I'm not nervous. Nope, nope . . ." sweat drops from his forehead, "We were just chatting, that's all, about Irenyath."
Cheni chuckles. "They were just vicious rumours and there was never any proof." She peers at Pwert; curious "It's not that warm out, you know, you do look awfully hot. Were you working out?" At the mention of Irenyath, she is distracted and she looks out at the dragon as she swims safely in the shallows. "She's really doing well, don't you think?"
Pwert nods quickly, ignoring the earlier question, "Oh yes, very well," he says, accepting the change of subject gratefully, "I'm sure by the time she first flies, she'll be a real beaut."
Cheni quirks a brow and chuckles mildly. "She's got a lovely personality no matter how she looks. And she's already flying, around the bowl at least."
Pwert whispers quietly, "She's already flying? My, that's good. Though, A'ran'll be disappointed. That means she's gonna mature real fast right?" Suddenly, he seems excited, "Yahoo! That may mean that I'll get that thirty-second off him after all.
Cheni quirks a brow at Pwert. What do you mean, mature real fast. Most of the dragons are airborne now. We are only allowed to allow -them- up to the first level of weyrs but she's doing fine. She got to fly alongside Yariath last night." She grins, not the least bit shy at showing her pride in her lifemate's accomplishments. "She figured out how to double her wing strokes to keep up with him as they glided across the bowl. It was so wonderful to see!"
Pwert smiles secretly, "Oh, nothing. Orievith isn't flying yet. No wonder A'ran's so sad, watching the rest of you in the air." he seems excited, and peers out at the green, "Very smart of her. It must not of been easy. Say, when do you get to fly with her?"
Cheni looks a bit worried at the last question. "Soon, I think. I don't know, I don't want to screw up her progress. She does things pretty easily, I would hate to ruin her record and set her back at all." She lets A'ran's sadness skim off her without a flicker. "They'll all be up soon enough."
A'ran is brown Orvieth's rider, at Telgar Weyr.
Pwert shrugs, and nods, "No doubt. I'm sure Yashira could scare them into the air if she wanted to." He laughs at the image in his head, and then smile serenely, "I'm sure you'll do fine with her, when its time."
Cheni blinks again, looking askance at Pwert. "Time for what? Oh, flying with her. Right. I guess we'll be all right. I mean, all I have to do is sit on her right? I mean, how can even I mess that one up?" Her mind races with all the possibilities and she shakes her head to clear it as Irenyath surfaces to try to spray those foolish enough to be near the shore." Yashira certainly is an interesting choice for her job but she did smile at me, a real smile the other sevenday. I was shocked."
Pwert chuckles, "Oh, I'm sure you can't screw it up. She's your lifemate - how could you?" He chuckles at that, "She smiles, but rarely. But not often a real one, huh? She's a pretty interesting lady, if I may say. Pretty strong, too."
Cheni makes a face. "I don't know. I just got this feeling I'm going to do something stupid. She never does anything stupid, so the odds are if something is going to go wrong, I'm going to be the one." She considers her lifemate for another minute then looks back to Pwert. "Strong? Oh Yashira. Well yes. I guess someone has to find her attractive in a certain way too, after all, she does have a babe."
Pwert nods, "Well, strong as it she can pick me up and carry me under her shoulder. And, don't forget she's a brownrider - Some green might just of found her brown to be attractive, too."
Cheni shrugs. "I don't know. The father of her child is a bluerider. I heard they are close to weyrmates." Not wanting to offend the younger lad, even after Irenyath makes her splurt out a giggle and a shake of her head, she chuckles solemnly. "Yes, she must be strong so she can lift you."
Orvieth and A'ran make their way onto the lake shore from the bowl, Orvieth walking slowly so that A'ran doesn't have to jog to keep up. Orvieth rumbles a greeting to the other dragons on the beach, ignoring nearly everything. Orvieth plods into the water, A'ran looks around and sees Cheni and Pwert, he moves over to the pair, catching the last few words of Cheni's sentence. "Who can lift him?" He asks, grinning.
Pwert nods eagerly, "She sure is. I got pretty far out there," he points to the lake, "When she threw me." He seems unsurprised by Cheni's comment on Yashira, "Must just be an outer face to scare away visitors, candidates and weyrlings then."
Irenyath warbles from the lake where she is currently testing how far a splash from her wings will reach across the shore. Cheni nods at both rider and dragon from her safe splash free zone. "Yashira. And she threw you in the lake, Pwert? Why?"
Cheni adds. "And just about anything else or everyone else who moves and breathes."
A'ran chuckles, "Because he was drunk." A'ran says, rolling his eyes as Orvieth bounds through the water, seeing how many ripples he can make. A'ran grins and looks around the shore. "How're you, Cheni?" He asks, looking at the other weyrling and smiling, not bothering to ask if he was interrupting anything.
Pwert looks innocently at A'ran, "Not quite. I think it was the whole calling Miss SitDownAndShutupeth a beautiful green dragon... that and waggling my nice blue bottom at her."
Cheni looks suspiciously at A'ran. "Why do you want to know?" Her eyes dart over to Pwert then back to her fellow weyrling. "Just what is up?" She breaks out into surprised laughter. "Ok, Pwert, start at the beginning. You painted your butt?"
Pwert chuckles softly, "Well, It all start when Makran, A'ran, now, I guess, and I happened to be visiting Telgar at the same time. Actually, you arrived after me, didn't ya? I can't remember too well." he grins softly, "A'lex and S'dar put some nice Benden red into my Klah too make it taste better." He ponders a moment, "I drank it all, and then started to play with the gold plushie. I used a piece of hide as a rider, but when I made the dragon fly - she kinda, ummm, had a horrible accident, so I learn to use riding straps for her - made of string . . .But she's was looking lonely, so . . ." he looks to A'ran with a grin.
A'ran shrugs at Cheni, "Just being polite," he says, grinning. He looks at Pwert and grins. "Yeh, I did." He says, looking at Cheni, "He thought he was a blue dragon, though Yashira was a green...story told." He says, "He was -definitely- drunk."
Pwert adds carefully, "But I didn't paint my bottom blue. I just thought I was a nice blue dragon with a very, long, long tail, and I was twitching it to say hello."
Cheni giggles as she listens to the tale. "I see, I think, Pwert. They got you into the wine? You were rather young for that weren't you?" She covers her eyes, not wanting to picture that. "Long tail, huh? Alright, I see. And that's when Yashira decided to dunk you?" She looks over at A'ran. "That's nice, politeness."
Pwert nods affirmatively, "Haven't touched it since. That was just before we were all got searched and what not."
A'ran grins at Cheni and shrugs, "Ah, It's just on trial at the moment." He says, looking at Pwert. "Good thing she never decided to use her crossbow, heh?" He asks, rolling his eyes.
Pwert grins at A'ran, "She's pretty good - she was showing me how when I was a candidate. I doubt she'd've missed."
Cheni blinks. "She's got good aim, good thing, indeed. And what, politeness is only on trail, then you return to insolence?" She smirks, good naturedly, and watches as Irenyath lifts herself out of the water a good two or three yards and shakes her wings all about. Her target still is not reached and the green falls back into the water.
A'ran nods to Cheni, "Yeh, pretty much." he says, "Not many benefits from being polite and it's -so- hard," he teases. Orvieth dives under water and jumps back up a few times, trying to see how high he can get...not very, obviously.
Pwert peers curiously at Irenyath's antics and grins. Then, hearing A'ran's teasing, he looks confused, "Hey, A'ran, how come you're being so mean to Cheni? I mean I thought you said you li-" he cuts off suddenly gulping, and looks nervously at Cheni as he realizes what he almost said.
Cheni drawls. "I don't know, you don't tend to get punched, slapped or yelled at when you are polite. I'd say those are benefits wouldn't you Pwert?" She watches Orvieth in his attempt. "Browns seem to be a bit slower getting skyward than the greens and blues, I've noticed. But they'll soar right past them soon enough." She doesn't seem to have heard Pwert until her name is put within a sentence "He's been mean to me since the day we met, don't worry, I'm used to it."
A'ran glares slightly at Pwert, "Huh?" He asks, scowling a little. He looks at Cheni and nods. "I'm sure he's strong enough to fly, just Ursa hasn't OKed him yet." He smiles again, "Nah, I wasn't mean the first day - oh, wait...yeh I was." He says, rolling his eyes.
Pwert frowns deeply, "But, but, but . . ." he seems confused, and, looking at A'ran's face, decides to let it go with a sigh, "You older weyrlings are so confusing!" he states with great exasperation. "And those do sound like benefits, Cheni. But, what'd he do the first day? Did he refuse to go outside and play ball with you, too?" He glares good naturedly at A’ran and giggles.
Cheni smirks. "Right. And the first day was nothing compared to what you did the other time." She smiles down at Pwert. "Don't worry about it, A'ran obviously finds it his greatest joy to annoy me, I find it my greatest joy to not tolerate it and that's pretty simple, isn't it?" She keeps her hand in her pocket. Must not ruffle his hair, must not give in to the temptation. Her hand half raises and Irenyath suddenly comes close enough to shore to whuffle Pwert anyhow. "Oops. And the first time I met A'ran was when he was a resident at Bitra and refused to get me a mug of water or even show me where such things were until I hounded him about it as it was his day off."
A'ran smiles at Pwert and shakes his head, "Nah...I don't think it's worth it..." He says, then grins. "It was right there on the table..." He says, then grins. "I'm part of your greatest joy, then?" He asks, chuckling quietly. Orvieth croons at Irenyath.
Pwert scratches his head looking from one weyrling to the other, "I've said it before, I'll say it again. You weyrlings are very, very confusing."
Cheni rolls her eyes at A'ran. "Don't put words in my mouth, brown boy." She rolls her eyes. "Right there on the table, way down past all the gamblers, the crowds and everything and he expected me, a stranger to know what table he meant." She frowns, her dander getting up again. "And then that rider came in and the way he fawned all over her!" She smirks at Pwert. "If you need anything cleared up, just ask."
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << You'll be flying soon. It's fun to fly. >>
Pwert scratches his head again, "Erk, what rider, Cheni? And that description seem clear enough - just go past all the people playing cards or dice."
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << It's not fair. I have to wait. >>
Cheni smiles sweetly to A'ran, answering Pwert. "Yes, that would have been much simpler if he had told me that. But visitors should be treated with respect no matter if they are a High Reaches rider of just Cheni."
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << You are bigger, you need to be stronger to lift yourself up. I am light. I may not be pretty like you but I'm light. >>
A'ran grins at Cheni, "But it's so fun to do that," he says, glancing at Pwert. "You understand don't you Pwert...I'd get in trouble for not helping a rider, but no-one'd care if I didn't help some girl from some tiny hold." He smiles at Cheni, "I said I was sorry." He says.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << You think I'm pretty? >>
Cheni wrinkles her nose. "No sense of real hospitality, just a worry about getting in trouble." She snorts. "And I forgave you, some."
Cheni mutters to Irenyath. "Handsome, not pretty, dear."
not even blinking, Pwert asks A'ran, "Did you find that rider attractive, too, though?" he nods at Cheni, "Of course. He should of just politely told you where to ask someone else, if he didn't want to help."
Irenyath> Orvieth senses that Irenyath looks chagrined. << Handsome I mean. I am not much to look at but that's alright. I am smart and Cheni loves me. >>
A'ran smiles and nods, "Like any true Bitran." He says to Cheni, grinning. He looks at Pwert, "Pwert, what're you talking about?" He asks.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << You don't look bad. >>
Cheni isn't impressed. "Remind me not to frequent Bitra again if all the Bitran don't believe in hospitality and good manners to all strangers." She snorts. "Attractive or not, she was a rider and we, there was another visitor there too, a Beastcraft worker, we were ignored." She shrugs. "Maybe I didn't look like I had any marks. But my lord holder who was out in the stables did, and he was offended at my treatment there as well."
Irenyath> Orvieth senses that Irenyath is amused. << No need to state anything but the truth. My hide reminds many of the color of muddy sludge. But it is my power that counts. >>
"What we were talking about this morning. Isn't fawning something you do to someone you find attratif?" he looks at Cheni rather surprised, "Why didn't you just thwap him on the head, then ask someone else?"
Cheni smiles ever so sweetly. "I don't thwap." She smirks. "But I got my point across, I think, regardless." She looks puzzled at Pwert. "Well, you an fawn over someone if you want something from them or think they can improve your status. Like some of those candidates who kept on trying to suck up to riders." She wrinkles her nose in disgust. "They were so cloying, no one needed sweetener in their klah. And a lot of them didn't impress, anyhow."
A'ran smiles, "I'm suppressed he had the title 'lord' Cheni." He says, "Pwert, don't give her ideas." He grins.
Cheni shrugs. "He's a minor holder but still an important one, in his own eyes and he insists on the title at the Hold. It's a habit."
Irenyath> Orvieth senses that Irenyath warbles. << Have you ever looked at some of the things that crawl out from the rocks on the lake shore if you turn them over? Too small to eat, but fun to watch when you blow on them and the roll around. >>
A'ran smiles at Cheni and nods, "That makes some sense, then." He says, "So, see, politeness gets you nowhere... I ask a polite question and I just end up getting the third degree..."
Pwert frowns deeply, "Then he warrants "holder" not "Lord." At least as far as I was taught. I don't see why you don't put it behind you two, though," he says with more confusion, "You were different people then. Why not forget it and just move on. Oh, c'mon, A'ran, don't rub it in . . ."
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Fun to stamp on as well...but then you get sludge on your claws. >>
Yrinth lands softly on the shore, greeting the weyrling dragons with a cheerful warble. Her rider undoes straps and hops down quickly. "Evening," Riane calls.
Riane climbs down from Yrinth's back.
Cheni sticks out her tongue at A'ran, then Pwert. "I'd have put it in the past completely if he hadn't.." She blushes. "Well, enough of that. I can't even repeat what he said about my sister and I. It was .." She shakes her head. "Not suitable for mixed company." She giggles at Pwert "What a holder does in his own hold is his own business. And he does have a few minor holds under him now. So he's not that small." She smirks. "You could never call him small." As Riane calls out, she immediately snaps to a salute. "Rider!"
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << But we can swim it off. >>
Irenyath warbles a pleasant greeting to the older dragon but continues her attempts to splash as much water as she can and as far as she can on the shore by lifting herself up at various angles and shooting water with her tail across the surface of the lake.
A'ran looks up to Riane and salutes as well, "Rider." He says, He looks at Cheni, "A joke...why can't you take a joke... R'yk would of found it funny." He says. Orvieth warbles a greeting to Yrinth, splashing water with his tail towards her playfully.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Yeh... Why is my rider annoyed at yours? >>
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << For the same reason my rider is at him. They don't like each other. Probably never will. >>
Riane pats Yrinth's side and approaches, returning the salute. "Weyrlings." In a less formal tone and a smile to include all three of them, she asks, "How goes things?"
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << He liked her earlier. Told me so he did. >>
Pwert smiles brightly at Riane in greeting, "Heya, Riane. Just back from sweeps?" he asks cheerfully before turning back to Cheni and Riane, "Aww, must've been bad if you can't say it, Cheni. Why would you do that, A'ran?" he beams at Riane, "Really well. They're just disputing good naturedly like old aunties and uncles, but the dragons are having a great time. Irenyath's getting really good at making big, big waves!" his voice takes on the shrill of excitement as mentions waves, "Those'll be fun to swim against come summer."
Cheni sniffs. "I fail to see what R'yk thinks would be amusing or not has anything to do with what I consider amusing. And R'yk was ready to belt a messenger who made unseemingly comments about me the other day. So there, until I told him I know how to kick where needs to be kicked, if need be." She smiles over to Riane. "She is growing wonderfully, don't you think? I mean Irenyath?" Pwert's comment earns him a grin. "It'll be fun swimming with them."
Dragon> Irenyath and Orvieth sense that Yrinth's tone is light and cheerful. << Hello! >> A tint of amusement in her tone, and she adds, << Use all of your body and the splashes will be -big-. >>
A'ran nods to Riane, "Well, Ma'am." He says, grinning. "It wasn't -that- bad Pwert, I don't think... you wouldn't understand though, knowing you." He grins.
Irenyath> Orvieth senses that Irenyath chuckles. << Well, she doesn't trust your rider much. Not after what that little one said earlier that you were talking about her to him. She is suspicious. And when she is suspicious, her tongue is sharp. >>
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << What did the hairball say? I was not meant to tell you my lifemate likes yours, A'ran just said... Suspicious of what? >>
Irenyath looks over at Yrinth and warbles her thanks. Good idea! She rises a good two or three wingbeats up in the air then crashes down into the depths of the lake, sending a wave that crashes up the shore a good distance past her last mark.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Yrinth and Irenyath with << Coolbigsplash Irenyath! >>
Riane looks over Irenyath, and nods. "She is indeed. And Orvieth too!" She waves a hand at A'ran, smiling slightly. "Riane's fine for now - as long as there's no Assistant Weyrlingmasters around, for your sake." Yrinth wanders into the shallows of the water, then rolls quickly out into the deeper part, sending a large wave across the lake. Then she warbles congratulations to Irenyath and slaps her own tail down into the water.
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << comes up for air after her feat. << That was fun. Hurry up and get strong, I bet you could make a bigger splash. >> She returns back to her thoughts.<< That he is just being nice because he is planning a prank. And the hairball got very nervous and covered with sweat when my rider asked more questions. >> >>
Cheni shakes her head and sighs. "I don't want to get into any bad habits, rider. I already fear the wrath of Yash."
Orvieth gathers himself up and splashes back into the water, folding his wings in and falling into the sand, warbling.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Prank? A'ran never said nothing about a prank...he said he *liked* her. I don't understand how he does...since he's nasty to her, and she's nasty to him... >>
A'ran nods to Riane, watching Orvieth and smiling, then frowning slightly.
Irenyath> Orvieth senses that Irenyath wisely keeps her thoughts to herself and you, not sharing them with Cheni. << My lifemate does not know that. She assumes he only wishes to torment and taunt her. Like a younger clutchsib. >>
Riane's head bobs and she shrugs, "I've been there. Though not under Yashira's charge, so I can understand your concern." She smiles for some reason, then wonders, "How's Yashira doing anyways? Haven't seen much of her lately."
Cheni shakes her head at Irenyath. "Careful now, I don't have anything clean to change into and I don't want to get wet as I have nothing to change into." She shrugs. "Doing?" She ponders. "I have no idea how she is doing? I suppose, alright? She doesn't talk to us about anything but orders and drills. She is mostly on her ledge when she is not training us. She's not the social type is she?"
Pwert snickers to Cheni, "As long as I'm not drunk, at least I don't have to worry about Yashira coming after me, eh? Though," he says with a broad grin, "Flying's fun! Especially without a dragon." He follows A'ran's line of sight, "Is something wrong, A'ran?"
Dragon> Irenyath senses that Orvieth rumbles. << Why don't you tell her - then they'll be nice to each other? >>
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << She would only be much more confused. >>
A'ran grins at Cheni then looks at Pwert, "No. Nothing." He says.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Guess so. A'ran is very, very confusing. >>
Cheni looks puzzled as she watches the dragons at play, a confused shadow crossing her face. But Pwert brings her back around. "Well, I must admit, I liked swinging from the trees back home when I was a kid. That's almost like flying."
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << I told her. See? She is confused. She cannot see how one who says things that he says could like her. She says I misunderstood. >>
Riane looks between Pwert, Cheni, and A'ran at the mention of something being wrong. But seeing as how she wouldn't be terribly observant of something being wrong in the first place, she just responds to Cheni. "Well, she does have Iralne still, I think. She's.. probably not the kind of person to be very social with the weyrlings she's in charge of." Shrug.
A'ran looks at Cheni for a moment, then looks back at Orvieth. He nods to Riane, "You were in her clutch, weren't you?"
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Yeh, you were right... Hey, you *are* really smart. >>
Cheni chuckles. "Or the candidates, either. I am sure she's a fine person, she seems to keep to herself around most people though, not just annoying weyrlings or pesky candidates. Maybe it's her past as a hunter, she prefers nature to people?" Her deep thoughts over for now, she gives A'ran an odd look then goes back to watching Irenyath who seems to be slowing down a tad.
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << As I said, I may not be pretty but I at least know my rider. >>
Riane nods, "Yep, we were Weyrlings and stuff together. She's just.." Riane's brow furrows as she searches for a descriptive word. "Yashira." She shrugs and glances at her dragon with a small smile.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << I don't know what A'ran said to her that is so bad... but he has very strange thoughts about her... >>
A'ran grins at Riane and nods, "Only word for her, eh?" He says.
Irenyath comes out of the water slowly, shaking herself off as silently asked by her lifemate at a great enough distance as not to spray the wimpy humans. Her color still good but her movements more slow than before, she looks ready for a nap. Cheni shakes her head. "If you'll excuse me, rider, I should be getting Irenyath back. That's enough exercise for now." She smirks at the explanation. "Well that fits, you are correct. She's Yashira." With a wink to Pwert and a reserved nod to A'ran, she walks beside Irenyath, one hand on the green's massive side.
Pwert speaks up softly, "She likes to hunt. At least that's what she told me when she's was training me with bow during candidacy." he giggles at Riane, and smiles, "Actually, would anyone like anything from the Living Caverns? I've got to go there, but I'll be back later."
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << Much what my rider thinks at times confuses me as well. Then she tells me that there are some things she has to keep in the back as it is not time yet for me to probe such things. I trust her. >>
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Fun to see if they can sense you probing, though. >>
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << She keeps some thoughts about male humans very close inside and will not think them at all, if she can help it. It does sound interesting though. >>
A'ran nods to Cheni, "See you later," he says, smiling.
Irenyath> You lumber in the direction of the central bowl, leaving the shimmering lake.
Irenyath lumbers in the direction of the central bowl, leaving the shimmering lake.
Dragon> Orvieth bespoke Irenyath with << Which male riders? >>
Irenyath> I bespoke Orvieth with << Male humans. She shuts her mind when I ask too many questions and then she goes and exercises. She says it relieves ... stress. >>
