In he Turn 1445, the weyrs had gotten so overcrowed that a new weyr was to be formed in the South, called Southern Bay. For over 50 Turns, this small weyr prospered, until 1501, when a strain of Firehead began to roam through the weyr. It killed only
the oldest and by 1503 it was gone-so they thought. In 1508-just sevendays before the dreaded Thread was due to return, this sickness did as well Hundreds were killed. The Weyrwoman Aurelia of Arath called for help via a healthy firelizard to establish a new, quarentene weyr for those of Southern Bay that were still healthy. She died soon after, her queen guarding the few eggs until they clutched, one of them Golden Gwynnyth, who Impressed young Erini. The healthy weyrlings were sent to the new auxilery weyr, though three weyrlings were send back and later died. It took two Turns for the last of the sick to perish, for no cure could be found, but a vaccinationhad been. Erini was only 16 when she Impressed. She begged the other weyrs to send down an older queen, but all were to fearful. Finally, after 2 Turns, Talia and Golden Mytath were sent. No one wished to return to Southern Bay, and instead remained at their new home which they named Big River. |
