HUNTING
-
or - So many critters, so little time...
The
Dumps - armor set # 2
1 - A shelter (hidden from plain sight, only visible when you look
at the area. This shelter acts like a lean-to in that it allows you to
rest while offline and animals can not enter).
2 - A clearing in the
midst of the dump. You will usually find that this is a good place to station
yourself if the dumps are relatively empty and you don't feel like stomping
back and forth across the length of the place. With your watch command
toggled-on you can usually "hear" rats and hounds almost anywhere in the
dump from this vantage.
3 - A lean-to. Like
any lean-to it allows you to rest at an accelerated rate, even when offline,
and animals will not enter.
From the
Vetallun Road mark walk east six times, southeast once, east three times
and north once. (Walk to Vet - Ex6 - SE - Ex3 - N) This will be
the first area in the dump. The dump is essentially a long path through
the dump with a short path or two extending from it before it rejoins the
Vetallun Road further east.
The interesting thing about hunting the dumps is that
there are no less than two rest areas in the hunting ground, as well as
one other area where rats and other animals will not go (the area immediately
north of the clearing). This allows you to fatigue yourself to utter exhaustion
hunting and walk only a few steps away to a lean-to or shelter to rest.
Once rested you are still merely a stone's throw of the action. In this
manner you can spend a great deal of time accumulating gems in the Dumps
if you have stocked a few torches, some food and manage to avoid getting
gnawed on too badly.
Plump brown rats
pelts and heads, stomach gems
Gaunt
gray rats
pelts and heads, stomach gems
Sickly
yellow rats
pelts and heads, stomach gems
It
should be noted that these three types of rats are relatively easy to kill,
usually. You may find a gray or yellow rat that is tougher than usual from
time to time, but for the most part they go down almost as easily as the
ones in the sewers. The drawback is that they hit you a lot easier than
the rats in the sewers do and, if the Dumps are not overcrowded with other
players, they can tend to "gang up" on you as new rats (and hounds) wander
by and join the fray.
Pale
white rats with crimson splotches
pelts and heads, stomach gems
Consider
that the pale white rat is a little tougher than the average Dump rat and
certainly a lot quicker. For lower level hunters he may well get worn and
run away too quickly for you to even reengage. This can be a real disappointment
when you have suffered a scratch or two and fatigued yourself in an effort
to get a gem from the quick little bugger. On the upside they almost always
have valuable pale green minerals in their stomachs.
Ragged
dogs
none(?)
Ragged
dogs do not fight. In fact, if you approach and attack one they will immediately
attempt to disengage and flee. They also, as you will notice in time, suffer
abuse from the other creatures of the Dumps. As such most players take
pity on them and leave them be. Don't be surprised if you attack a poor,
ragged dog in the Dumps, that another player may take offense at your action
and give you a glare.
Hounds
pelts, stomach gems (rare, though)
Hounds
are not all that hard to hit but can take a while to actually put down.
Not to mention if you are already engaging an animal in the Dumps when
they wander by they can make it easier for your initial opponent to hit
you by joining in themselves. As such, they can be a real pain when you
are fighting something else because they take so long to kill. (Thanks
to Jetal for the update on hound salvageables!)
