Although the Klingons do appoint titles to Military Officers, they typically do not use any sort of insignia to denote rank. For a Klingon, an officer's skill and prowess in battle is the only sign of true rank. However, due to close contacts and personnel exchanges with the Federation, the Klingons have developed a set of insignia to be used by Klingon officers serving on Federation vessels.
It is difficult to explain the guidelines of the Klingon rank structure, as none exist. Due to their generally disorganized rank structure, a Klingon's actual military rank has little bearing on his position aboard ship, as it is more often than not the Klingon's position that determines his rank to begin with. It is a consideration rarely bothered with on Klingon ships; the warrior in command is to be obeyed regardless of his rank, and if he is unfit to command, then he should be challenged, regardless of his rank. If a Warrior First Class defeats a Captain for command of the ship, that Warrior is considered to have immediately advanced to the rank of Captain; and if he is removed to a lesser position, then he loses this rank just as quickly. |
