Owbn Rites Packet version 1.2
By Karen Hechel, Silver Fang Tribal Narrator

sorrowspirits@icqmail.com

Note: This applies to Garou, kinfolk and other Bete aren’t included as they are outsiders in Garou society.

Rarity levels:

Very Common: Rites everybody knows, or should know

Common: Rites a lot of people know, all Theurges should know

Uncommon: Most higher ranking Sept members, Elders, ranking Theurges.

Very Uncommon: Some Elders, High ranking Theurges

Rare: Elder Theurges, Select few people

Very Rare: Very Select groups of Elders know this, if that. Most are forgotten, and sitting on dusty shelves. A great quest destined by Gaia herself is one of the few reasons someone could know this rite.

Unique: Rites created by a single person that only that person knows. You can only learn that rite from them. Only known by the creator and those he’s taught

Lost: The knowledge is gone, either purposely, or through the ages.

Impossible: Can't recieve it under any circumstances because of a ban.

How to determine your rarity level:

Rank: The higher in rank you are, the more you know. Rank is the default.

Rank Rarity Level Rite Level
Cub Very common Minor
Cliath Common Basic
Fostern Common Basic
Adren Uncommon Intermediate
Athro Very Uncommon Intermediate
Elder Rare Advanced
Legend Very Rare Legendary

Auspice: Different Rites are possessed by different Auspices. (Commonly)

Auspice Rite Type
Ragabash Punishment, Caern
Theurge Mystic, Caern, Seasonal
Philodox Accord, Death
Galliard Renown, Punishment
Ahroun Death, Rite of Wounding

If a rite is “in auspice” you are 1 level higher.
Theurges are naturally born for performing Rites. They are effectively 1 level higher.

Station: If a sept position requires a rite, then all rarity requirements are fulfilled. (But not rank requirements) For instance, it’s hard to hold the position of gate keeper without Rite of the Opened Bridge. If the new Gatekeeper doesn’t have the Rite, he is encouraged to learn it as soon as possible. But if he is also only a Fostern, he can’t possess intermediate rites, and can’t learn it until he becomes higher rank.

Rites Background: The higher your knowledge of rites, the easier it is to get them. See Rites Background errata below.

Membership: If the rite is possessed by a camp or tribe you are apart of, you gain a higher level for that rite, and have access to it.

Teaching rare rites to cubs:
Teaching Rites that wouldn’t be available to people otherwise is frowned upon. Certain Rites are known to certain people for a reason. If you teach secrets of your tribe to others, that is a matter for the elders to decide. For teaching secrets Gaia has deemed secret, then the spirits get angry and more than likely ends up in spirit notoriety. This depends on the circumstances however. A Garou is unable to teach an “out-of-tribe” Rite. For instance: a Silent Strider possessing the Stargazer Tribal Rite: Fung Shui is unable to teach it to anyone. This prevents tribal secrets from being common to everyone. Teaching camp gifts (especially those of secret societies) is HIGHLY frowned upon, and may result in serious maiming, or even death. (Or as dinner if you’re talking about the Eaters of the Dead)

Rites Background errata:
In Laws of the Wild Revised, the Rites background is just copied from the table top book. Here are the suggested conversions:

Level
Rarity Level (Knowledge)
Traits
1
Common
Receive 1 Basic Rite (Uncommon or less)
2
Uncommon
Receive 2 Basic Rites (Uncommon or less)
3
Very Uncommon
Receive 3 Basic Rites (Very uncommon or less)
4
Rare
Receive 5 Basic Rite (Very uncommon or less)
5
Very Rare
Receive 5 Basic Rites (Very uncommon or less),1 Intermediate* (Common or less)

*you may know it, but you can’t perform it until Adren Rank*
All rites chosen are at Storyteller discretion.

Creating Rites:
A copy of the new rite is given to the Garou-coord. (To make sure we don’t have duplicates later on, or if someone is searching for a particular rite with a certain effect)

For each level or Rite (the level of what youre making is determined by the ST), it takes one month per stage of creating it. There are three stages to creating a rite: Researching the Possibilities, Querrying Spirits and Scouring the Umbra for clues to make it work, and Constructing the Rite. Thus, to create a level three rite or gift, it would take twelve months to create.

During each stage, there is a Rituals challenge against 9 Traits plus the Level of the Rite (so the
level 4 rite would be against 13). This is in addition to ROLEPLAY!

Minor Rites
: anyone can create these, but they don’t get the renown, as long as they are at least a Cliath and have a rituals level of 1 or greater and are appropriate to the char (no Children of Gaia Theurges praising Fenris for example)

Basic Rites: require a rituals of 3, spirit lore of 1, occult 3 and perhaps some other requirement. You also have to know intermediate rites in order to create one. There is a renown reward if a basic rite is completed successfully.

Intermediate rites: require rites of 5, spirit lore of 3, occult 5 and other requirements possibly. (Rites background of 3, other abilities) You must know advanced rites in order to create one. There is a large renown reward if completed successfully.

Advanced Rites: can only be created by the most adept Elder Theurges. (Perhaps natural channel or ability aptitude rituals) along with spirit lore of 5, rituals of 5, occult of 5 and I would recommend the Rites background of 5 for attempting, along with whatever abilities related to the rites effects. Advanced Rites are rare, and are very powerful, and are difficult to perform, let alone create. Possibly only have this option open to legends.
