EAA Application
Temperment: This mare has an excellent temparment. She is great with kids and she is going to be the leader in my new lesson horse program. Carrie gets along with mares, stallions, geldlings, foals, any horse or anybody. She does have her quirks like the way she bit someone when she was younger and how she puts her head up whenever you try and put on the bridle, but other than that she has an excellent temparment and is always a sweet heart.
Why should your horse be approved?: My horse should be approved because, as you may know, the oldenburg isnt exactly the most popular horse in ED. I am trying to promote the breed and I think if some of my oldenburgs are very high quality then it will help the breed grow and get better. I also think she should be approved because of all the hardwork she has done to get her HOFCH title.
Describe how your horse reacts in the following situations::
* Vaccinations/check ups: Dosent mind them and has never bucked, bit etc. when she was getting them. She will back up when she sees a needle and has too be held still but she dosent mind it too much.
* Emergencies: She dosent handle emergencies as well as she could. Once she had to get stiches in her lower leg and they had too give her a tranquilizer. As long as she dosent have to get stiches shes fine. A good example of this is the time she got her halter caught on a tree branch. One of the new employees forgot to put on her breakaway halter. She stood there under the tree and didnt back up which is a good thing because if she had slipped she could have broken her spine :o I found her and helped her a few minutes later.
* Farrier visits: She likes the farrier, i think she looks at as a horsey maincure. She dosent like the loud noise so someone has to be there next to her. As long as it isnt too loud she stand still and enjoy the attention.
* Turning out/bringing in: The only quirk she has with this is she does a slow trot to her paddock, but she always comes down when you ask. She loves to romp and run in the paddock and enjoys the fresh air.
* Feeding time: As long as you dont go in her stall when shes eating then she happy. This is her favorite time of the day! She loves the bran mash we serve on thursday nights and she always dances around in the cross ties when she sees food. We always have to make sure the feed room door is shut. She dosent mind if I go in her stall after she eaten just as long as she isnt eating.
* loading/trailering/unloading: The trailer is her 2nd home. She has been to shows all over the U.S. and loves the trailer. As long as there are partions between the horses shell stand there, munch on hay, look out the window and enjoy the ride. She always walks calmly on and off the trailer and shakes her head and whinnies when she gets off.
* Grooming/clipping/bathing/tacking up: She loves attention and enjoys a good bathing. She walks happily in the wash stalls and stands there enjoying the attention. She lovesto be curried and groomed she normally falls asleep or looks like shes asleep. The only thing she dosent like is putting the bridle on she raises her head when ever someone trys to out the bit in her mouth.
* Schooling on the flat at home: She is great on the flat and is always calm and happy. She has excellent animated gaits and I always enjoy riding her in the ring, in the field or in our many acres of trails.
* Schooling over fences at home (if applicable): She loves to jump. She can get a little excited and speed up when she comes up to the jump, but we are currently working on that so she should be over it in a while. She has good form and is always calm and she listens.
* Schooling at a show: She likes to try and race the other horses, but only if shes cantering. Shes very good and likes to look at the new things. I make sure to always show her the jumps/new things in the ring so she wont spook or refuse a jump. The only thing I have to do is make her calm, walk her around the show grounds, give her treats and shes a great performer.
* In the show ring: She is very focused and amazing in the ring. She is very competitive and always try her best, and she loves to be in the spotlight so at the end of every performance she always does a little buck and whenever she wins she has to winnine just to get more attention. Shes always good and I am very proud of her performance in the ring.
* In the paddock with other horses: Carrie gets along good with other horses, since she isnt the dominant mare in her herd. She goes in a 7 acre paddock with 5 horses including herself. She dosent like to be alone. If shes crowded she'll do a little warning buck but no horse has ever been hurt by carrie.
* Around dogs/cats: She likes cats but not dogs, because a dog once darted under her legs and it really scared her. Her best friend is one of our barn cats, Missy a black tabby. She always spends the nite in carries so stall. And Missy is always on her stall door or perched on the rail at home. Carrie really loves her. She wont hurt a dog but shell stamp her hoof till he goes away.
* Around people: She loves the spotlight! She welcomes any attention and shows off most of the time. You can always count on her to be gentle and dependant.
* In a scary stuation: Not much scares this girl. As part of her training when she was young we would put bright things around her, put balloons on her halter and stuff like that. I know it sounds crazy but now not much spooks her. When something does then as soon as someones with her shes calmed down. But if someones not there and shes scared it could be trouble.
Anything else you would like to add?: I love this mare and I know she would be perfect for the approval. She has already been approved by a new organaztion the oldenburg/sporthorse registry, the ED Hunter Horse Association and the eventing association. I hope shes approved then we can help preserve the oldenburg breed even more.
This is the form that allowed her to pass with 97%! :)
