  Sony may make rpgs that have a strong homogeneity to other game developer's offerings. The Legend of Dragoon was early scrutinized for being a replica of Square's Final Fantasy series, well its the same here. With a mixture of many games as inspirations for the creators early on such as the combat of Zelda and Secret of Mana, to the weapon building of Vagrant Story,Toan is sort of wimpy main character, but he is a elf thats why and even town bulding like a old SNES classic of the past, Actraiser. You start off as Toan, a young boy who can be in the process of dreaming this world and its adventure. He looks like Dart from the Legend of Dragoon with the same style of pants and the criss cross belt. He has the green hood and pointy ears like Link of Zelda fame. Early on Colonel Flagg who like most villians is hungry for power, releases the Dark Genie who has been imprisoned in the eastern land for more than 400 years, for the destruction that he caused. Colonel Flagg desires for some apparent reason to erradicate the Western continent which is not technologically advance like the Eastern continent. Toan steps in the story when his home town is burned to a crisp by the Dark Genie. Next, the Spirit Emperor meets and greets Toan(Since he is the one, no not Neo). The Emperor hands him an artifact called the Atlamilla, placed on Toan's hand he can now rescue people who are enclosed in spheres called Alta. This is the beginning portion of our Dark Cloud's tale.

Like I said the gameplay is a conglomeration of many games. Here is the goodies of the gameplay, the town building. Using what Sony calls a new system but we all know that Actraiser started it. When searching through the caves and other dungeons you must collect from Atlas and place the people and buildings where ever you may choose, the feeling of accomplishment by restoring all the land really made me feel like a hero. The next aspect of gameplay is the fighting which actually is weak. Toan only has a certain amount of moves and the targeting is really difficult and does not make matters better when fighting a horde of hard enemies. There is some life added a little later when five allies help out. Xiao wields slingshots and can jump large distances. Goro uses hammers and axes for attacking, perfect for smashing things. Ruby can use magic bracelets to shoot fireballs, and to open special doors. Ungaga uses fighting staffs and spears, and can use his whirlwind attack to blow away evil clouds. Finally, Osmond is one of the Moon People, who attacks with guns and lasers. Each ally is used, since there are some doors that can only open with a special ability/attack, and some bosses need you to figure out what ally to use to help defeat it.

Now on to the graphics and story. There are times when locations look simply breath taking. PrettyThere is alot of variety in the locations, from the port, to the desert and forest; yes the moon too. And when placing the buildings and objects of them, they are actually shown in their excact area in real-time too, whoa! The dugeons are the only weak point of the visuals, the textures repeat and everything just looks bland. Even with this negative Dark Cloud stands tall as the best looking rpg out there, surpassing Skies of Arcadia. This is the best looking rpg until Final Fantasy X arrives. The story surprised me with some over-the-top moments that added spice to the dialouge, mainly because the graphics allow flexibility and the characters move with life, charm and grace. My kick in the nads is, hardly any story, like Vagrant Story and Evolution, the game relies mainly on exploring the depths of dungeons. Oh and music believe it or not sounds a little like Chrono Cross, which is a high compliment since Chrono Cross has what I call the greatest video game soundtrack ever. There should have been more tracks recorded for the game, since this title does go long with more than 30 hours of play.

Dark Cloud truly has some highlights, like the very impressive town building. The duels which play out like Dragons Lair are fun too, and there is just some weird charm this game has on me with its characters and atmosphere.....maybe I like elves. The graphics too for most of the part are well executed. Some blemishes here and there stop Dark Cloud from being called a classic, but its still worth a rental. Then after the rental period is over comes the purchasing, and with lots to do its not a bad buy. Hey its the best debut rpg I have seen for a system in a long time(Thy memeories of Beyond the Beyond be gone), but its not perfect. Expect lots of dungeouns and I mean a hella lot, so therefore because of that along with lots of things to check on like drinking enough water so you won't die of thirst take maybe a point of this game.If this does not bother you then add a point and you have your score.
Rating=8.0

ProsGeorama system works well, and the graphics can be absolutely stunning.
Cons=Lots of tedious dungeon crawling :(, too much to keep track of like a thirst bar and constant weapon repairing and upgrading.
