I have always
been facinated with fantasy. Tales of mythical creatures, daring swordfights,
magic and mystery... The best stories, I must admit, were in childhood
and a product of my own imagination. But only because I was always
a main character - either the dashing hero or the dastardly villian.
It is no wonder then, that I was smacked a lot and called a dreamer...
As I grew older,
I stopped dreaming - or rather... that part of my brain ceased to
function. Suppressed by the demands of a university education and
the numbing mindlessness of computer games... what was once a fertile
field of fiction became the barren wasteland known as 'writers' block'.
Then I found
The Palace and the myriad of virtual worlds it had to offer. I was
attracted to fantasy themed palaces and eventually settled in a medieval
themed palace. There, I was given the opportunity to exercise the
part of my brain that had lain dormant for so long.
But, as always,
being the rebel without a clue, I found the rules, tests and restrictions
tiresome and began work on my own place. A palace which I hoped to
realise my ideals.
It began as a
tribute to my favourite author of all time, Terry Pratchett. But as
the number of rooms grew, the palace seemed to keep reinventing itself,
finding even the rich medium of the Pratchett world limiting.
The Library now
features 3 main thematic areas: Grecian, Discworld and Medieval. I
am sure that the list will grow in time.
There is a strong
Grecian theme throughout this palace. For that reason, Morpheus, the
ancient Greek god of Dreams, was chosen as a 'patron god'. You will
see his name a lot as you wander through-out the palace. My team of
wizards and myself are referred to as the Staff of Morpheus (the girls
like to be called 'muses'), simply because it's much cooler than calling
ourselves 'librarians'...
The Library of
Dreams has been a labour of love. Some of the backgrounds you see
are original photographs and composites. Some have been 'borrowed'
from other talented artists. All have been put together with meticulous
care.
I hope you will
enjoy your visit to the Library. Come in and share the dream...
