Red XIII was an expiriment for the synical Hojo. Red's real name is Nanaki. Nanaki's feirce exterior hides his inner love for his Hometown and Planet. He cares deeply for his Grandfather Bugenhagen. He has hated his father ever since his family died in the Gi Attack. Nanaki had always thought his father ran from the Canyon in fear, but later learns that he was the brave warrior Seto that stopped the Gi from attacking further with his life as a sacrafice. Red matures greatly on his adventures with Avalanche.
