Death of a Cat

This the story of a death of a cat. It is real, and I personally witnessed it.

One day, I was walking home from school, crossing the roads, carrying my backpack and a suitcase of a friend. I was tired, and all I wanted was a bath, and to spend some time on the computer. I had already crossed the main road crossing my path on the way home, and I knew I was already half way home.

Now on the way was a house, which was the home of several cats. Usually if you peeked into its compound, you could find one or two cats. Other cats also frequented that area. This house, was at the bottom of a slope, and my home is further up at the top of the slope.

I was approaching that house, and I heard a vehicle accelerating aggressively behind me (It was a slope, vehicles have to accelerate). I walked to the side of the road, among the parked cars. I watched that vehicle pass ahead of me. It was a bright red land rover, the kind made for city use, and not rough terrain. I didn't notice any passengers in the land rover, but it went really fast.

At that moment, a cat, with fur striped orange and white, was sitting on the right side of the road, directly opposite of that house. As the red land rover sped in front of the house, another cat darted out behind a parked car to the other cat. It was grey and white and it probably didn't notice the incoming car, and came incredibly close to it. So close until the front right wheel of the land rover hit its head.

It knocked it hard enough to make the cat fall. Blood sprayed from the cat and covered a small part of the road. The cat managed to fall away from the vehicle, preventing a quicker death. The vehicle slowed down slightly before the impact, and it came to a stop several meters ahead. I saw a child in the backseat looking back at what happened. The cat kept on flinching, kicking its legs as it lied on its side. It wriggled on the road for a while, like a fish out of water. A small boy, a man, and a woman inside the house looked on at the cat.

The driver of the stationary land rover, accepted the fact that it had ended the life of an animal, and decided to continue on with life. It started moving again, at a slower pace, and turned at the next T-junction. The cat, which movements were getting less intense with time, finally stopped moving. The other cat, carefully walked close to it, staying about 3/4 meters away. It walked back and forth watching the dead body of the other cat. Another cat, from the house, mewed loudly, as if crying out for the other cat. The legs of the dead cat, moved slightly for the last time. The boy who saw the accident got into his father's car, and mentioned the incident to his father.

I left the area, looking intently at the blood of the cat on the road, thinking what have we done to appreciate life?
