OVERVIEW: You start FF2 with Frioniel, Maria, Guy, and Lionheart fleeing from the town of Phin that has been invaded by the Empire. They are knocked unconscious and are rescued by Hilda, Princess of Phin that has fled to Altea. Lionheart has not been found and you must return to Phin to try and find him.
I. The Beginning
-You'll start off by being given the chance to enter a name. Even though they don't give you default names they are Frioniel, Lionheart, Maria, and Guy. You can name your team by these names or make your own, it's up to you. You also have the chance to change your message speed for the entire game. Keep it at 6 because anything higher is too fast too read and anything lower is so slow that it becomes annoying. |
-You'll be immediately thrust into a battle against 4 DkKnights that you will stand no chance against. After losing the fight you'll appear in some castle with 2 people standing around you talking. |
-The two people are Hilda, princess of Phin, and Minh. Hilda says that you were fleeing Phin when the empire invaded it. You were ambushed on your way out of Phin. |
-This empire also seems to be building some sort of warship at Bofsk that seems fairly powerful. This empire seems pretty vicious. After Hilda and Minh leave you awaken and wonder where the rest of your team is. When you take a walk out of the room you'll find them. |
-It seems that both Maria and Guy are alright and are glad to see you. Maria is happy that you're alive and Guy tells you that they were rescued by the Princess of Phin and that Lionheart hasn't been found yet. |
-Next talk to the Princess. She'll tell you to remember the password Wild Rose and that it's a crest of the Phin and is also a secret passage. In order to remember the password talk to her again. |
-This brings up a screen that is used oftenly throughout FF2. You will have the chance to learn certain things that people say to you and then to say the things that you learn to other people. So make sure that you learn the Wild Rose password. Once you've learned it you can say it to several people throughout the castle and the surrounding town of Altea. |
-Say Wild Rose to the queen first. She'll tell you that Phin would be a good place to start looking for Lionheart. So it's off to Phin, but before leaving you should check out the entire town, talk to all of the people and check out all of the shops. |
-You can talk to Minh and he'll also tell you to head towards Phin. Another man in the room tells you that Phin has been taken over by the Empire and that there are monsters everywhere. |
-You can also talk to the King of Phin in a room to the right of the room that the Princess is in, even though he isn't in the greatest shape. It seems that he was also injured when the Empire invaded Phin. |
-This person finally tells you the name of the town that you're in, Altea. It seems that Princess Hilda fled here when Phin was invaded and seized by the Empire. You also learn that Hilda is leading the rebellion against the Empire. That's all there is to see in the castle, head underneath this woman to the door to exit the castle. |

-Outside of the castle you'll meet Paul a great thief. He plays a role later in the game. |
-You'll also meet Gordon, who was the prince of Kashuon. Apparentely, his brother Scott was captured and he fled. |
-You should also talk with Tobul in the weapon shop, he doesn't have anything important to say, yet. In Altea don't bother to buy anything but armor for now. Buying weapons is pointless because there's nothing you can buy to improve yourself. You will want to buy some magic but not quite yet. (You don't have the money.) |
-As far as armor goes I recommend buying 1 buckler, 3 leather gauntlets, and 2 leather helmets. When you have the money you'll also want to pick up another helmet for Maria/Guy. Maria can't wield a buckler so don't bother buying one for her. Equip the new equipment from the status screen. You'll also notice that you can also equip items in FF2, so equip them also when you get some to use them in battle. |
III. On to Phin
-There's nothing left to do in Altea, so exit the town and head out to the world map. On the world map there are random battles. You need to get in these battles to raise your stats and to obtain Gil (Money). There is no experience in FF2, unlike every other Final Fantasy game. Rather, you raise stats by doing various other things during battle. |
-For example, attacking several times during battle can raise your power. Taking a lot of damage can raise your HP, and using a lot of MP can raise your MP a little. Weapons and magic also gain in strength from being used several times. After using a magic spell or a weapon 100 times, it gains in strength. This is a very brief overview of the system, for a COMPLETE and in-depth explanation including how to raise all of the stats visit the
Stats Page. |
-CHEAT: There are a couple ways that you can get around having to raise your statistics this way. Magic and weapons have to be used 100 times to go up one level, but you don't actually have to use them. Let me explain, let's say that you fight with Frioniel, you have to click A on fight and then press it again to select an enemy to attack. Well after you've done this and it's Maria's turn all you have to do is simply press B and you will be taken back to Frioniel's turn. It will still count this as though you had attacked. So if you do this over and over again, with either weapons or magic they'll gain levels without ever having to actually use them. Another helpful hint is to attack your own characers in order to gain HP. Your own characters will do much more damage than enemies will and your HP will go up much more often the further it goes down. Some people consider this cheating, and some don't. In either case it's quite a programming error in the game.
-Weapons: As far as weapons go it really doesn't matter which weapon type (swords, javelins, axes, bowes, etc...) you have each of your characters equip, just as long as you keep that weapon type throughout the entire game. I highly recommend keeping Frioniel with a sword, Maria with a bow, and Guy with an axe throughout the entire game. It's a powerful combination and it's much simpler to keep track of. Some people prefer to give Maria a cane but I choose not to. Bows aren't that great in the beginning of the game but they get much better as the game moves on. Whatever you do, don't change your weapon type once you've picked one. Your weapons gain levels and if you switch you'll have to start all over again on these levels. For more info on weapons visit my
Weapons page.
-Another thing that you can do in FF2 is to switch the row of your characters. I recommend moving Maria to the back row because her bow does the same damage from either row and in the back row she will be unable to be hit from enemy physical attacks. In the back row characers can only be hit by magic and not by physical attacks. |
-The battles that you'll fight around Altea aren't difficult by any means. You'll mainly have to fight Hornets and Goblins that aren't difficult. You should fight some until you've raised your weapons a level or two and you've raised your HP a little. With the gil that you earn from these battles you can return to the town and pick up another leather helmet. You may also want to pick up a cure spell from the magic shop if you can afford it. After that it's time to head for Phin, to the north. |
