Lord of the Rings Test

All questions are worth four points. It is possible to get partial credit.

1. In no particular order: Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took, Fredegar Bolger, and Folco Boffin. Give yourself one point for each name that is correct, and a half a point if you only remembered nicknames (Merry, Pippin, and Fatty). Sam is not a correct answer. He was Frodo's gardener, but he was not one of his close friends until later.

2. "A stroke, a dot, and three more strokes." Strider translated this to be "G three," which meant that Gandalf was there on October the third.

3. Aragorn's only contribution was reference to a green stone. He thought Bilbo was being cheeky to write a song about Elrond's ancestor in Elrond's house. He was probably right.

4. The signs were drawn by Celebrimbor of Hollin. Give yourself one bonus point if you knew that Narvi made the doors.

5. Galadrial's ring was Nenya, the ring of adamant.

6. Simbelmynė or Evermind. Give yourself a bonus point if you wrote down both.

7. Eomund was Theoden's brother-in-law. His son Eomer is refered to as Theoden's sister-son, and Eomund is Eomer's father. Hence, Eomund is the husband of Theoden's sister: his brother-in-law.

8. Eomer's sword is called Gśthwinė.

9. Sam offered to make Smeagol "fish and chips served by S. Gamgee." The conies with herbs were made for Frodo, but give yourself two points anyway.

11. Peregrin's guardsman friend was Beregond.

12. The blank should be Mindolluin. Give yourself an extra point if you knew Gandalf said it, another if you knew it was said to Denethor, and another if you knew they were talking about the ring.

13. Eowyn rode under the name of Dernhelm.

14. The woman was Ioreth.

15. Frodo was glad that Sam was there with him "at the end of all things."
