Tri-Ace releases yet another work of art. Too bad most gamers won't realize it. Valkyrie Profile is an RPG and Side Scroller/Platformer combined! You take control of Lenneth Valkyrie, one of the three goddesses that govern destiny. She is sent to Midgard, land of the mortals, by Odin to gather teh souls of brave warriors to aid the Aesir gods in the up and coming battle at Asgard. In dungeons Valkyrie can move around as if she were in a Side Scroller/Platformer. And she can climb walls, jump higher, make steps, and freeze enemies by manipulating ice crystals (which has unlimited use). Valkyrie can also jump around to reach new areas and brandish her sword to initiate in combat or shatter ice crystals for more uses. Battles, like all Tri-Ace games are different and unique. Three characters accompany Valkyrie in combate and each one is assigned a button on the controller (Triangle, Square, X, and Circle). And by pressing the respective buttons a character will attack...if you use a combination of the buttons then the characters will perform combos or if used in unision the characters will double team the enemy. It's very neat, just a little difficult to explain. You meet up with a huge cast of characters that can be recruited. At the end of each chapter (there are 8 chapters) Freya will sumon you and request powerful warriors. So you will then send up a trained character to aid Odin (and you can't get them back), but if you don't send characters or disobey Odin the the Aesir may lose the battle or Odin will send Freya to terminate you! And the three endings and difficulty levels keep you replaying the game. The item creation system from Star Ocean:The Second Story returns, though in a slightly differnet form. Valkyrie Profile is a rewarding experience...good voice acting, memorable characters, entertaining story, and unique battle system...and it's all done very masterfully. Don't pass it up.
