History of Cosrin

Deep in the mists of time, long before the thoughts of mortals, long before the first breaths of the Gods, there was Kali. Gentle, compassionate and with the flow of life coursing through her, she looked at the heavens and saw a void there. Knowing it was large enough for a beautiful world, she set in motion the forces of creation. Slowly, forming it between her loving hands, she wove the energies around her into a globe which grew and grew in size until it was big enough to set into the void that would be its new home. Still she focused the energies and still the globe grew. Finally, Kali withheld the flow and looked with great pleasure at the new world she had created. She then cut the strands of power from the whirling energies around her, knowing that they would no longer be needed and may even cause harm if allowed to get loose.

But something was missing...the little planet was devoid of life. She gazed around her at the other planets and worlds she had created and decided that this newest world would be the home of the life she was going to birth.

So Kali drew on the fabric of the little world itself and created the first of the Immortals, Valtera. Valtera was meant to be just like Kali; fair of form and nature, gentle and nurturing. But she was flawed, for Kali didn't foresee that drawing on the creative forces of the world itself also meant drawing on the whirling chaos used in its creation. Valtera saw that she was meant to be just like Kali but could never truly be and grew to despise Kali. Everything she did was just shy of being perfect...just short of being completely right. In her rage she decided that if she could not equal Kali in all ways and rule as she felt she had a right to, then she would make herself opposite in all ways. So one night while she thought Kali was busy elsewhere, she carved runes all over her skin. Horrible, writhing runes which made her a horror to behold. But Kali saw what she was about and it saddened her greatly. Still, she hoped someday to find a way to turn Valtera's hatred of her and of the lands to a more creative and benign path, so she didn't interfere, though it grieved her.

Seeing a need for some balance to Valtera, Kali created the second Immortal to counter her, Ica. Ica was born naive of magic to such an extent that its evil quallities do not affect him, so Valtera can cause him no harm with her evil spells. Conversely, this naivity means that he cannot harm those with powerful magical protection. Ica loved the ways of battle and war and grew in strength and power. Valtera, he saw as ultimate evil and constantly battled her to maintain the balance of the lands from her excesses. But Ica had a fierce temper. Although he served the good of the lands, his rages often caused massive amounts of destruction as well. Kali, realizing that a balance to Ica's volatile temper was needed, drew on a beam of sunlight and created Indus. He, too, fought for the lands but with more even handed approach than his brother Ica and with more of a heart for the innocents and defenseless.

Thinking things were as settled as they could be with Valtera and Ica, Kali turned her attentions to the world itself. She called forth the forms of the land from the floors of the mighty oceans and colored them green to balance the blue of the skies. With a breath she created plants and trees of unimaginable beauty and lushness. She gave rich hues of browns and grays to the soils and rocks of the landmasses and caused the oceans to shimmer a deep blue.

While Kali roamed the lands creating, however, Valtera was busy about other things. She was not at all happy about how things were settling out and felt she was far better suited to be in charge. She began to delve into the darker side of the creative forces that still whirled in chaotic confusion. Knowing that Kali was still in the process of creating things to fill the world with, Valtera devised a plan. She developed a special spell and just as Kali cast into being a new beast, Valtera threw her spell into the mix. There erupted a great explosion and storm. Kali was shocked and turned to look at Valtera in horror, unable to stop what had been begun. When the storm rolled away and the earth ceased its trembling, a new creature stood before them both. Kali turned to Valtera and said, "Since you have conspired to do this thing, he is yours to teach and to train. He is your responsibility and you will answer for his actions." Valtera named the new creature Loki and took him off to train him.

Kali, sighing heavily, went to a quiet place to ponder how things were settling out.

She sat high on a mountain top and looked out over the lands she had called into being. They were very beautiful....but also very empty. Her children were wandering the lands and were getting into mischief. Well, she had time to sort it all out. Life was without end and there was no hurry. Loki and Valtera, however, were growing bored. Loki, created by Kali but filled with the greed and ambition of Valtera, bided his time and learned all he could from Valtera. Valtera, was tiring of using the beasts for her little "experiments." Not to mention that they were gaining in numbers. Eons of experiments were creating more twisted and warped beasts than was safe. She had to find a way to end their existances so they didn't get to the point where they may be able to rally against her. So she went to Loki and appealed to his well-developed sense of greed and avarice. She used sly words to woo him to do her wishes. They schemed and came up with a plan.

As the years passed, Ica grew in strength and the arts of combat, but his rages left ravages upon the lands as often as not. Indus, chose another path. Seeing the mischief Loki and Valtera visited upon the world, and helpless to oppose them directly, Indus took it upon himself to oppose their depradations upon the world. While allying himself with Ica, he fought for the causes he believed to be just and true, yet disdaining Ica's love of combat where he believed there was no need of any. Steadfastly opposing Loki, for whom he blamed many of the worlds woes, he fought and battled for those mortals who were otherwise helpless before the beasts both Loki and Valtera created.

Loki began to work dark and dangerous magics. For a millenia he labored, careful to keep what he was doing hidden from Kali and even from Valtera. Finally, he knew he had what he wanted. He had the item of power that would give him what HE deserved. It didn't look like much really...just a huge boulder. But it would attract no attention until it was too late. He teleported the boulder to a central location and began calling up the power he would need. He summoned the darkest energies and wildest of the whirling magics that surrounded the planet. With a yell he cast the spell that would change the world for all time. Kali, feeling the draining of massive amounts of power, flew to where Loki was. She cried out in despair, knowing it was too late to stop what had been cast. "Loki...you have no idea what you have done!" Kali cried out. The boulder, once plain and ordinary looking, now throbbed with a deep green pulsing energy. All around them the plants and trees began to wilt and decay. Animals began to wither and die. Throughout the lands, a new smell, the smell of death, permeated everything. Fearing the destruction of her lands if she didn't act quickly, Kali plucked a flower which had not yet begun to decay and called the remaining floes of power to her. Not noticing that the flower was a dual bud, she called into being a daughter to hold the reins of this new thing...time....in her hands. The double budded flower burst forth and from it came a set of twin women, Anyana and Andaria. They gathered to them the strands of the power streaming outward from the boulder and with their combined strength slowly pulled the strands to themselves. The wove them together in a tight ball so they could not escape and held it between them.

"Kali" Anayana spoke. "This thing called Time cannot be removed from your lands. From now on beasts, plants, trees....everything living thing..will have a finite span of time and will then die. We can hold the threads from destroying the lands totally, but we cannot remove the taint they have caused here."

Kali, wept for the lives of the life forms which would be lost because of the introduction of Time. She turned to Loki and spoke angrily to him. "As you have brought entropy, and thus time, to the lands, all further creations of mine will be tainted. Yet, with Andaria and Anyana counteracting the ravages of Time, none will be truly lost, for all who die will be able to be reborn."

Kali, turned and catching into her hands her own tears, called on the powers of her heart and called into being the Goddess Senrania. "Senrania, I need someone who will care for the wounded, hurt and dying. They will need comfort and I won't always be able to be here. I charge you with the comfort and tending of their pains and hurts. Guard them as best you can."

Senrania, filled with the compassion that flows in Kali's heart nodded and said, "Yes Kali. I will give them what aid and succor I can."

"Anyana and Andaria, I charge you with the guarding of this boulder and with keeping track of the lives and histories of those who will come after. I would not have any creature live and die unknown and unnoticed. Every beast, every living thing is to be accounted for." The twins curtsied and said "Yes Kali, it shall be so"

With that Kali struck the boulder with the glowing ball of threads and thrust it down deep into the rock...into the very center of the world. Crystal clear waters sprang up and began to flow from the boulder sending nourishing waters throughout the lands. She turned and faced her firstborn children, now all gathered around her: Ica, Indus, Valtera, Loki, Anyana and Andaria, Senrania. "The world I planned will never be the same now. From you, and others like you I will create, will come those who will abide and live here, for good and for ill."

From time to time, some of the countless Immortals who were created before Time wrought its devastating effect upon the fair land would become increasingly concerned with events upon the realm, and would make their presence known. For many, this would be to experience life as a mortal, reborn, knowing mortal limitations, and unknowing of their previous heritage. Yet with mortality, came entrapment in the unending circle of birth-death-rebirth. For those who chose not to become involved, they looked on at their once-brethren in despair, seeing that they would never return, and lost to them for all eternity. These became the Heros of the realms and in time their descendants became the mortals who populated the world Kali had created.
