SIMPLE DEFINITIONS
- ALCOHOL
- Ethanol, the intoxicating agent found in fermented and distilled liquors.
- AMPHETAMINES
- C9 H13 N, or one of it's derivatives (dextroamphetamine or methamphetamine) which is often abused s a stimulant of the central nervous system.
- ANABOLIC STEROIDS
- A drug that helps a person develop muscles faster. It has many sideeffects such as liver cancer and impotency.
- BARBITURATES
- Sometimes called "barbs" or "downers". Similar to hypnotics, they are a type of tranquilizer that produce calmness and various other effects very similar to alcohol. it is very often abused.
- DEPRESSANTS
- Any drug that slows down the body, calms down nerves and relaxes muscles. Large doses can cause slurred speech, lack of coordination, shaking and confusion. Large doses can stop a person's breathing.
- DESIGNER DRUGS
- Synthetic drugs that are made to replicate the effects of other drugs, includes Ephedra and Ecstasy.
- DIURETICS
- A class of many drugs that all remove water from the body. They are mainly used to lower blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension.
- HYPNOTICS
- A type of sedative, they depress or slow down the body's functions. It can cause unconsciousness and death if abused.
- INHALANTS
- Any of a wide list of household items which conatin harmful chemicals that are often abused by people by inhaling the fumes evaporating off the substance.
- NARCOTIC ANALGESICS
- The strongest known of all painkillers. Includes heroin, morphine, pethidine and codeine.
- ROOFIES/DATE RAPE DRUGS
- Flunitazepam, which is marketed under the name Rohypnol, is a powerful depressant. Within 15 to 20 minutes after a person takes it, it causes all depressant effects such as muscle relaxation, reduction in anxiety and sedation. The reason it is the mainly used date rape drug is because it lasts 4 to 6 hours and causes amnesia during this period.
- SEDATIVES
- a mild tranquilizer that is used to help people sleep and reduce feelings of panic or tension.
- TRANQUILIZERS
- Depressant drugs that is sometimes used to treat anxiety or insomnia.
