Pemberville 5-miler

Welp, we all decided that we would / could run the Pemberville 5-miler on Friday, August 17, 2001. So we did. I knew the race would prove to be interesting, since I hadn't run in two weeks and Trevor hadn't run over a mile...in his life! So we got to the starting line, ready to go. The siren went off, and the race had begun. Knowing there were 539 people behind me, I knew there was a good chance I could have been trampled, so I took off like I sometimes do...in a sprint. So I was winning the Pemberville 5-miler for the first 200 meters. Pretty cool, eh? I thought so. The race went on like a long freakin' race, and I was tired after the first mile. It was a 5:41. Yikes, too slow for a good time, so I was doomed from the beginning.

The second mile was not as strong as the first, a 6:28, yikes again. That means my two mile or 3200 was a 12:10, good enough to make states in D3 girls' track. Ha. Do remember, however, that I had three miles to go. Now if you've ever run a long race before, you know that you get slower as the race goes on. That was totally the case here, as my third and fourth miles were 6:51, and 7:10, respectively. 7:10? Can you believe it? I can't, that just sucks. So all through the race I was talking to myself, wondering where I should start my kick for the last bit of the race. The last mile sounded good, but when I got there I thought that I would wait just a bit longer. When I got to the last half mile, that time didn't feel right either. I was so dead. I just wanted to stop, but you can't do things like that when you only have an 800 to go. So I never really had a good kick, I just let people pass me up in the end, and it got to the point where I didn't care. Maybe I could have beat them, maybe not.

So what's the point of this story? I'll tell you: get in shape before you try to run a race, otherwise you'll just make a fool of yourself, as I did in this case! But, what else is a lesson here? I'll let you know that too: have fun! And we all did.
