You choose the trail on the right of the path. After a few minutes of walking, you have seen many riders on magnificent horses, children playing in a field of corn and a herd of cattle in one of the fields. In a clearing you see a two large ranch houses and many, many barns. You sigh and then behind you comes a voice. You turn quickly and an old couple smile at you and the old man says, "I see you have found us." He smiles at your confused look and continues, "We are the Grants. We are the owners of this large ranch. When my wife, Elizabeth, developed a bad case of arthritis and with my bad heart, we had to hire many farm hands. We still help on the cattle drives and compete in Shows and all that though. But we've turned it into a guest ranch and now it's a permanent home for many. We have lots of room for you if you would like." The old man shakes your hand and then helps his wife into their cottage beside the barns. You look around at the friendly people as they smile and say hello or wave. You pick up your bags and head to one of the ranch houses.
Once you were settled into the Ranch House, you decide it's time to go exploring. You walk out of the building and follow another path. It leads to a large field where people are working on the crops. You realize that this is one of the duties that you need to participate in to earn your stay. A young lady, about 16, walks over to you and introduces herself, "My name is Katie Martingale. I've lived her since I was a small child. It's a marvelous ranch with many competitions in town and many wonderful places for us kids to hang out. But of course there is the dirty work as you see behind us. This years crops should be good. We sell them at the Market in town. We give the money to the Grants and they use it took buy more things for around here. Last year they added onto the barns, the year before, a new tractor to make life easier on us. They're good people." She leaves you with that and returns to her tractor and starts to fertilize the corn and potatoes.
