ALICE COOPER, THUNDER, QUIREBOYS, DOGS D’AMOUR Manchester arena – 20th Nov. How can I come away from a gig featuring 2 of my fave bands a ‘little’ disappointed? The venue didn’t help, big arenas are not my favourites, give me the University or club venues anytime… But with a stage show the scale of Alice Copper that’s not feasible. The Dogs were great, in the space of 40 minutes a greatest hits set & a couple from “happy ever after”. The Quireboys did a similar set by the way of hits & songs from last years “this is rock n roll”. But it was all over with too soon & my photos didn’t come out cos I was too far from the stage! If you liked what these bands have done in the past then you’ll love their new-ish CDs & go and see em live if the opportunity arises. I’m not a big Thunder fan, but I stayed & listened to 20 minutes of their set, before taking up residence in the bar….! Another gripe about the venue - extortionate beer prices!!! Alice Cooper was simply fantastic, good show & good songs. They played my faves, “billion dollar babies, under my wheels & frankenstein” & the man himself still holds onto that wonderful rock star persona.

THE D4, MIKA BOMB Manchester Academy – 30th Nov. I’d been looking forward to seeing D4 again since buying their brilliant six twenty CD, which is rock n roll-tastik… First up tho was Mika Bomb, who I enjoyed, don’t know much about them, part Jap & English I think? Punky enthusiastik & entertaining… The gig was well attended & took up a good spot down at the front & D4 rocked. Brilliant from start to finish, they included most of the songs from the CD, including the fantastic cover of NYD’s pirate love. Only problem was that it was the last date of the tour & they had run out of Rock n Roll ------------ T shirts!!!!

DATSUNS, HELLACOPTERS, GAZA STRIPPERS Manchester Academy – 11th Dec. I had heard a few Gaza songs on Mp3s so was looking forward to seeing them live. Unfortunately missed half the set, but what I saw was good, even tho they were one member down!! I think the singer was back in the US for his child being born….. Their music is on the punky side of garage rock, they have 4 Cds, one of which I bought later. The Hellacopters are a strange one for me, I have 3 of there Cds & had another on tape with Dregan on guitar. That one is my favourite, a little livelier & heavier. I think I find too many of their songs one paced, but live they rocked out a bit more especially into the finale, & they had me & most of the crowd rocking with them… Having seen the Datsuns twice before & them being one of my fave new bands I left a little bit disappointed after this gig. I loved em, but maybe they were tired at the end of a hectic year for them. They added a couple of new song since the last tour, all of 3months ago, & they sounded good. I can’t see them being to refreshed since they are on tour again in Feb!!!!!
