Place Names of Torbay

CABOT ROCK

It is located between Tapper's Cove and Treasure Cove. It is supposedly where John Cabot climbed to look down on the countryside.

PULPID ROCK

Supposedly where Catherine Coady was married to a British soldier after the landing of Amherst. It is the place where mass was said before a church was built in Torbay. The priest would come from St. John's. The rock served as a pulpid and an alter.

GALLOW'S COVE

The name is derived from a sort of erection which was until some years ago seen in many settlements and was known as a "seine gallows". It was a horse or tristle made of rough reuls or starrigans and was used for drying nets.

TAPPER'S COVE

A cove located on the north side of Torbay. It has been used in the past by the fishermen in the community. In the Sailing Directions and the English Pilot, it was called Green's Cove, but later aquired the name Tapper's Cove for the men living in the area and fishing in the cove.

TANTUM COVE

Two large rocks located off the southern head of the harbour, Torbay Point. Tantum refers to the misuse of the English word tantrum, which meant a fit of passion or ill-humor. The name was applied by Torbay fishermen. It is a ledge of fishing ground and in heavy seas or storms, the waters rage and seethe over it and it is said to be in a tantrum.
