every night's predator

by Kelly Loewen

you are every night's predator, you glare and hate to lose
you want to chase them down and chew them up
angry at everything, down in the dark of your
own basement. but why are you so angry? you
can give me many excuses but they don't work
for me. because i can see through all your
mirrors of clouded judgement and i know all
your justifications. you are every night's predator,
look what you've done now. the people will chase
you down, her glassy eyes still staring. gravel
in your rubber treads, tear in your jacket. she'll
never stop floating behind your bloodshot eyes
no matter how far you run or how hard you
rip at your hair. all the flowers wave goodbye
as you sink down in the dirt again. You hate yourself,
you hate to lose, you've witnessed the marigold
death. you are every night's predator and now
you are the prey. you truly are the evening's
fool, and every night's today.
