Hellboy

I was recent reading Rolling Stone's review of this movie, and for once I agree with them (except for their final rating). This movie had the potential to be THE BEST comic book movie ever and it fell short. That's not to say it wasn't very good.

The beginning sequence lays out the origins very well. The enemies are presented (the Nazis, who else?) as are the good guys (Professor Bloom and a little red devil who likes Baby Ruths, cats, and BIG meals). All is well until he fights a monster who doesn't seem to die and lays a lot of eggs. That's fine, but he fights this thing throughout the entire movie. For a movie of this caliber, it needed more monsters. Yeah.

There was one kickass enemy who was decked out in metal, and every time he was destroyed, he could come back to life in another metal suit. Awesome. He was also a master of weapons. This guy, and a gaggle of villains, are bent on destroying mankind and need Hellboy to do it. Doesn't an antihero kick ass or what? This one sure does. But Selma Blair's acting doesn't. I had to check and see if some downers got slipped into my drink before I realized it was just her acting.

Overall, Hellboy is a solid movie with a few small weaknesses. I give it 3.5 chainsmoking demons out of 5.
