I bought Chappelle’s Show Season 1 on DVD on a whim. When I purchase DVDs, I’m usually very dead set on what I want to buy, so this one was unique. All I can say is this: it’s friggin’ hilarious. OK, OK, I’ll elaborate.
In the very first episode on the disc, Dave plays a blind black guy who leads the White Supremacists in his area. That should set the tone. It’s not so much that it’s over the top (which, well, it is), but it’s that it’s just over enough that it isn’t absurd. Dave’s take on social issues inserted into crazy skits is a very tasty concoction.
Some other mentionables are Tyrone the crack addict, Ask A Black Dude, Trading Spouses, and the Player Haters Awards. It’s one of those shows that can appeal to the masses rather than a specific audience. So, if you can handle it, this is definitely worth a watch.
Going into Season 2, it's hard to believe that the show hasn't peaked. But it's during this season that the show really catches the world's attention with skits such as Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories: Rick James (and Prince), Lil John, Oprah's Baby, and more. It somehow outdoes the first season.
Touching on the "Lost Episodes," there were only 3 and it's obvious that Dave was really feeling burned out at this point (these were released after the notorious quitting of the show and going to Africa). The humor was lacking, and the exploitation of races was too over the top for just about everyone.
I give Season 1 4 Mad Reals out of 5, Season 2 4.56 out of 5 fingers-to-the-face, and the Lost Episodes a mere 2 out of 5.
