I was suspicious about renting this film just because (a) the previews made it look really stupid and (b) it looked like a major Evil Dead ripoff. Those who know me best are probably wondering “why the hell is he complaining-he loves Evil Dead.” Well, that would be because I hate to see a classic get sent to ripoff hell. While it wasn't directly copied, the influence was there.
Five teens on break from college decide to go to a cabin to party (hmm….sounds familiar). What makes this different from Evil Dead is two things. One, there are no deadites out to possess the drunken partiers, just a flesh-eating virus. And two, the slapstick comedy incorporated is completely different.
There’s really nowhere to elaborate on the virus, but the comedy is the key to the movie. Everything seemed so normal yet completely whacked out. The deputy of the area keeps ranting about parties. There’s a strange kid who bites anyone who sits next to him. And of course there’s the local yokels. It makes one wonder if people are really like this, and when it’s realized that there are, it’s damn scary.
While it’s not the best movie in the world, I recommend it to anyone who likes zany, bloody horror flicks (not gory per se, just bloody). Anyone else can avoid it. I give this feature 3 bloody thighs out of 5.
