Bubba Ho-Tep

Before I even start into the review, I'll lay out the premise for you. Elvis Presley (played by Bruce Campbell) and a black JFK (Ossie Davis) are in an east Texas nursing home in the present day, and they battle a thousands-year-old soul-sucking mummy who wears a cowboy hat and likes to leave bathroom graffiti on the walls. OK, let's start.

Even though it sounds goofy, the way it ties into itself is done masterfully. Don Coscarelli (directed the Phantasm movies) adapted a short story by Joe Lansdale into this comedy/horror/drama. It switches gears so often that one doesn't really know for sure just WHAT TYPE of movie it is.

It got to be quite depressing early on to see just how the elderly are treated in nursing homes. And, trust me, my ex-girlfriend worked in a few, and I saw the exact same thing in this movie. But, of course, there's those little funny moments that make you say, "hey, why do I feel sad that Elvis has to get a possible cancerous tumor drained at the end of his wangus?" Exactly.

Sure enough, the black JFK gets into the mix, and they battle everything together from nobody believing them when they say who they are to that damn mummy named Bubba Ho-Tep who's killing the elderly and sucking their souls. Whew. A geriatric fight between Bubba and Elvis + JFK is the climax of the movie.

I don't know how I made this sound, but the movie is damn fantastic. I recommend it to just about anyone. The horror is barely horrific, but the subtle horror of the elderly in nursing homes is very apparent. The comedy is solid (Bruce Campbell's the f***ing man!) and Ossie Davis is always a solid actor as well. Give this one a rent, or just go and buy the damn thing like I did and give it a chance. I give this 4.999999999 JFK conspiracy theories out of 5.
