Smouse History

In 1929, Physicians Dr. David W. Smouse, M.D. and his wife Dr. Amanda Cummins Smouse, M.D. gave $333,000 to the city of Des Moines to construct a school for physically handicapped children.

The cornerstone was laid on April 28, 1930 by Dale Gresdal, a handicapped junior high school student. The building opened on March 5, 1931 to warm reception. [4][5]

Though the school's setting was traditional, it contained quite modern facilities for its time such as a central ramp, a physiotherapy department equipped with hydrotherapy tanks and heat lamps as well as a playground on the roof.

Furnishings were planned under Des Moines Public Schools' art director, Bernice V. Setzer who designed ornate wrought iron fixtures and clay tile reliefs. Most floors were of asphalt tile set in various colors and patterns. Other floor coverings included wood in classrooms for the deaf, brick on the patio and terrazzo in restrooms. [4][5]

Over the years, the staff has changed and the building was remodeled with 2 additions: a pool room added in 1953 and a new classroom wing in 1963. What has not changed, however, is the school's friendly environment and hospitality. [4][5]

"Be steadfast and courageous,
be brave and true,
believe in yourselves
and carry on!"

-Dr. David W. Smouse [1]
