A Brief History Of

HI-FI was formed in 1985 as a four-piece ‘top forty” rock band. The band performed at various night clubs in the region playing contemporary dance tunes and original material. Their song “Anyday” was included on the compilation LP “The Class Of 99+” (associated with the now defunct and often missed FM station KFMH). They followed that with an LP cassette of 13 original songs in l996 simply titled “HI-FI”.

In the years that followed the band underwent various changes in line-up and musical genres. In 1998 when they became a three-piece retro act the name was changed to “The Neons”. The Neons’ repertoire consisted primarily of music by artists from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The band continued to include originals along with their list of recognizable dance tunes.

In 2004 after the addition of Daryl Person on drums and vocals, and a decision to kick the retro material up a decade, the group re-vamped their song list and added songs from the decade of the 80s. They have now changed the name back to HI-FI, since it became obvious that it is the name their listening public associated them with and remembered most. “Lots of  people that come to see us remember John (Webb) and I from that band, and now that we’ve added in this 80s material we resemble it even more”, founding member Steve Elliott explained. “Since most everyone I talk to has some exceptionally good memories of HI-FI, we thought we’d quit fighting it and try to carry on the tradition that the original band started”: Original songs, classic hits, full vocal harmonies, good times. . . . Solid rock.
