Mike's Review
This was Nick Gilder's third solo album. Although it isn't as hard as You Know Who You Are or City Nights, and failed to produce a hit like 1978's "Hot Child In The City," it makes up for it with some of Gilder's catchiest songs ever. In fact, that's probably why none of the singles from this album ever really took off, too many of the songs are too good for their own good, making it difficult to choose a winner. Frequency kicks off with appropriately-titled rocker "(You Really) Rock Me." The next tune, "Time After Time" will have you singing it time after time with its addictive backing vocals and chorus. Other standouts include "Watcher Of The Night" (complete with great Gilder wailing), and the keyboard-driven "Into The 80's." Overall, this album has a very futuristic feeling, including its appearance, its song titles and themes, and its abundance of synthesizers. I've intentionally waited until the end to review the song "Electric Love." It's got a great guitar riff, precise backing vocals, an amazing chorus, and a totally retro keyboard bridge. This song is not only one of the best songs on this album, but one of the best songs of Nick Gilder's career. It alone is worth the price of the entire album.
Mike's Picks: (You Really) Rock Me, Electric Love, Watcher Of The Night, Into The 80's
Mike's Rating
Unfortunately, Frequency is long out of print, and has never even been issued on CD. I have a copy on both record and cassette, but I would kill for a CD reissue. EMI Music Canada recently reissued City Nights, which actually included input from Nick. I contacted them in hopes that reissues of his other albums on their label (Sweeney Todd, You Know Who You Are, and Frequency) were to follow, but they told me they have no plans to do so at this time. I encourage anyone and everyone to politely contact EMI Music Canada and encourage the re-release of more Nick Gilder!
