I am attending Barton County Community College to pursue my degree in Elementary Education. I have already received an Associates Degree in Graphic Design through BCCC. I decided to come back for an education degree because It will make me much happier in the future teaching than it would being a graphic designer. Teaching has so many possibilities to advance and do different things, whereas graphic designing is just repetitive. Teaching may not be the best paying job out there, but it is definitely one of the most rewarding professions.

I was born and raised in Hoisington. I have one brother who is currently attending Kansas University. I graduated from Hoisington High School in 1997 and began my college experience at BCCC in the fall of 1997. When I first started college, I did not have a major because I had no idea what I wanted to do. In the fall of 1998 I decided I was going to use my artistic abilities, and obtain a graphics degree. I’ve experienced what life is like living on my own, and realized that your career is what truly makes a person happy. That is why I decided to come back to college. Teaching children is what I am supposed to do and I believe it will give me a long promising future. I’ve realized that living at home is the cheapest and most beneficial way to go financially while attending college. I am going to finish my degree through Newman University. All courses can be taken through BCCC, so living at home will help on finances.

Currently I am attending two night classes at Barton. I work part-time at the Great Bend Recreation Commission supervising P.E. classes after school. I am also substitute teaching for many schools in the Barton County area. This will help me on resumes and in the future getting a feel for teaching. I am taking Western Civilization online. The two night classes I am attending are Comp 1 (Tuesday) and Introduction to Philosophy (Monday). I am taking these courses at night and on the Internet so I can have my days open for substitute teaching. I spend time with family and friends quite often. Occasionally I pay visit to my brother in Lawrence. I currently live with my parents, so they are around pretty much all the time. We’ve been traveling to see my cousin play high school basketball lately when we have time to. Nothing will get in the way of my education. It is very important to me right now. My number one priority at this time is completing my degree.

My plans for the future are very detailed, and I plan to follow it faithfully. In December of 2006 is when I play to graduate with my degree through Newman University. I will then student teach for one semester. Hopefully by the summer of 2007, I will be in my first classroom teaching. In five years, I hope to be teaching from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Those are the grades that I prefer to teach. I also want to be an assistant coach for football, golf or both. Looking ahead to ten years in the future; I will be teaching and head football or golf coach and assistant in the other. Further yet, twenty years down the road, I hope to be an Athletic Director of a school district. I love sports and plan to be involved heavily with the sports programs.

My whole purpose for being in college is to better my life and make myself happy in what I do. If I do not finish my degree now, I probably never would. College is helping me buckle down and get my priorities straight. I will be finished with Barton County CC classes in the summer of 2005 and then will move on to the Newman University program in the fall of 2005. My reason for being here has become much stronger than the first time I attended Barton County Community College, mainly because I know now what it is that I want. Barton has given me a great start to fulfilling my life’s goals.
