A military drum beat and bugle-like keys tell you this is going to be a serious one. When
the vocals begin, sure enough, the proud, defiant song starts to take off, with a carefully
restrained melody that breaks in the second chorus, soaring into a a glorious, generous, dramatic
burst of energy that made my blood go cold the first time I heard it and every time since.
This is probably the most popular Comsat track; it's usually cited as the one that most fans
remembered/noticed first. The 1984/Land version is the Comsat's own favourite, and mine too; it's got a more
powerful sound to it. There is no doubting it is a classic.
A declaration
Of the intention
To stop extension into my airspace
I'll put the flags up
Pull up the anchor
And then you'll know you're in a different place
- And I can't stand up and I can't sit down
- 'cause a great big problem stop me in my tracks
- I can't relax 'cause I haven't done a thing
- and I can't do a thing 'cause I can't relax
You've got your habits
I've got my customs
I'm sure you know it's got to be this way
No hesitation
And in the future
We'll celebrate on Independence Day
